摘要:
Upper bounds are derived for the probability that the sumSofnindependent random variables exceeds its meanESby a positive numbernt. It is assumed that the range of each summand ofSis bounded or bounded above. The bounds for Pr {S – ES≥nt} depend only on the endpoints of the ranges of the summands and the mean, or the mean and the variance ofS.These results are then used to obtain analogous inequalities for certain sums of dependent random variables such asUstatistics and the sum of a random sample without replacement from a finite population.

摘要:
The problem of estimating the seasonal component in an economic time series is discussed and it is pointed out that the effects of any moving average operator on the seasonal component may be easily reversed so that one may use any suitable operator to remove the trend. The computational procedure is to estimate the seasonal index for the trend free series and to convert this index into a seasonal index for the original series by taking 12 term moving averages of this series (continued periodically) with weights depending on the operator used to remove trend. Weights for some commonly used operators are tabulated. The problem of estimating a slowly evolving seasonal is considered.

摘要:
This paper is a review of techniques for obtaining the treatment combinations that comprise a fraction of a factorial arrangement. Several procedures for constructing fractional replicate plans, which in their original form appear to be different, are presented in a manner which illustrates their similarities. The techniques discussed include orthogonal and non-orthogonal plans for both symmetrical and asymmetrical factorial experiments. The plans developed range from those that permit estimation of main effects only, to those that permit estimation of main effects and all two-factor interaction effects.

摘要:
Some unusual features of the likelihood function of the three-parameter lognormal distributionln(t – γ)∼N(μ, σ2) are explored. In particular, it is shown that there exist paths along which the likelihood function of any samplet1, …,tntends to ∞ as (γ, μ, σ2) approaches (t(1), – ∞, + ∞), wheret(1)is the smallest of theti, and hence that in a meaningful sense this is the maximum-likelihood estimate. Estimation is then considered from a Bayesian point of view, and some natural posterior distributions are explored. A statistical model for a point-source epidemic is presented, and the theory developed is used in estimating the time of onset and other parameters.

摘要:
Mark Twain is widely credited with the authorship of 10 letters published in 1861 in theNew Orleans Daily Crescent. The adventures described in these letters, which were signed “Quintus Curtius Snodgrass,” provide the historical basis of a main part of Twain's presumed role in the Civil War. This study applies an old, though little used statistical test of authorship—a word-length frequency test—to show that Twain almost certainly did not write these 10 letters. The statistical analysis includes a visual comparison of several word-length frequency distributions and applications of the χ2and two-samplettests.

摘要:
This paper presents techniques for testing various hypotheses related to the notion of temporal homogeneity of a population each of whose members can belong to any one ofSstates at any time. These hypotheses include Cochran's interchangeability hypothesis, the hypothesis of strict exchange, the usual homogeneity hypothesis for multinomial distributions in the presence of correlated samples, and the hypothesis that a first order Markov chain is in a steady state.

摘要:
This paper discusses the computation of multiplek-statistics and provides techniques for seminvariantk… through weight 8. After a review of pertinent background material, specific techniques for calculation through weight 4 are presented for desk calculation with application to moment formulae involving the mean and variance. Then the various methods of calculating seminvariantk… through weight 8 are examined, Basic formulae needed for the recommended methods are presented in tabular form. The general problem, of moments and estimates of moments ofk-statistics is then treated. A machine program is available through weight 8. Specific references are given throughout so the reader who is unfamiliar with this material may examine earlier results.

摘要:
In this article some leading results of a mathematical investigation of exact finite sample distributions of GCL estimators are given. These results pertain to the distributions of estimators of coefficients appearing in econometric systems of three structural equations. The results show that the general forms of exact distributions derived for coefficient estimators in two-equation systems re-appear in the corresponding cases of three equations systems.
