摘要:
The structure, thermal properties, electrical characteristics, and mechanical behavior of graphite are reviewed and the highly anisotropic character of graphite crystals is emphasized. The interesting properties of graphite are due in large measure to the strong semimetallic bonds between carbon atoms in plane layers and to the relatively weak binding between planes. Details of its structure are due in part to the Frank dislocation mechanism for growth of crystals. Thus graphite has a low vapor pressure and approximately two‐dimensional electrical and thermal conductivity. It is easily deformed in slip on the basal plane, but in polycrystalline form it is relatively strong at high temperature. Its lamellar nature is emphasized by its reaction with alkali metals and bromin

摘要:
Various anomalous properties of borosilicate glasses are explained by the assumption that the atomic groups, each of which consists of one BO4tetrahedron with four BO3triangles bonded to it, are formed in these glasses. These atomic groups result from the reasonable postulate that BO4tetrahedra cannot be bonded to each other, and that each BO4triangle cannot be bonded to more than one BO4tetrahedron owing to the disposition of the cation which neutralizes the –1 electronic surplus charge of the BO4tetrahedron and prevents these tetrahedra from approaching each othe

摘要:
Titania‐opacified cover‐coat enamels applied over ground‐coated sheet metal are subject to varying amounts of compressive stress. The initial stress as well as the stress after annealing at 550°F. of eight titania‐opacified enamels of different fusibilities was investigated by means of expansiometer rings. A general relationship between compressive stress relief due to annealing and fusibility of the enamels was est

摘要:
A dilatometer has been constructed with minimum expense that operates with a specimen ¼ to ½ in. high, is self‐calibrating, indicates a motion of 2 × 10–6in. accurately throughout a range of 0.10 in., is used to a temperature of 1400°C., and records its data automa
