摘要:
This investigation represents a first attempt to interpret the thermal behavior and constitution of bone china by means of a phase diagram of an idealized system. A consideration of the Tricalcium phosphate‐alumina‐sica phase diagram in relation to the quaternary system lime‐alumina‐phosphorus pentoxide‐silica indicates that the composition of a normally tired commercial bone china body is β‐tricalcium phosphate and anorthite in a siliceous glassy matrix. X‐ray examinations of many such bodies confirm this interpretation. This preliminary investigation indicates the most profitable fields for fu

摘要:
The use of various zirconium‐type opacifiers such as zircon, zirconia, and the alkaline‐earth silicates of zirconium in fritted and raw glazes maturing in the range cones 06 to 04 and cones 9 to 11, respectively, and the properties of the resulting slips and fired glazes were investigated. Substitution of the various opacifiers was in each instance based on the molecular glaze composition. In the fritted glazes maturing at cones 06 to 04 where the use of all types of zirconium opacifiers was not possible without altering the molecular composition, optimum properties were obtained with zircon. In the raw type of glaze maturing at cones 9 to 11, in which a greater variety of opacifier substitutions could be made, combinations of the alkaline‐earth silicates of zirconium as opacifiers produced a marked improvement in slip properties and a definite reduction in opacifier segregation compared with glazes opacified with zircon or with zirconia. Use of the alkaline‐earth silicates of zirconium did not impair other fired properties such as opacity, gloss, texture, and

摘要:
Chemical reactions involving silicon in various atmospheres at elevated temperatures were studied. Formation conditions of silicon sub‐oxides were determined. Silicon‐base cermets in the systems silicon‐titanium dioxide and silicon‐titanium carbide were investigated along with combinations of titanium carbide and titanium silicides. The oxidation resistances of specimens were measured. Specimens were prepared by slip‐casting techniques involving no pla

摘要:
Equilibrium relationships in this ternary system were determined by the quenching method. The only ternary compound occurring in the system was found to be Ca2ZnSi2O7, which corresponds to the natural mineral hardystonite. It has a congruent melting point (1425°C.) and a large primary‐phase field in the center of the system. Primary‐phase fields for cristobalite, tridymite, CaSiO3, Ca3Si2O7, Ca2SiO4, ZnO, and Zn2SiO4were also determined in part or in full. The results of this work have some bearing on the minerals and reactions occurring in lead blastfurnace slags and in glazes containing zinc o

摘要:
The existence of two zirconium phosphate compounds has been established. The “normal” phosphate, ZrP2O7, has a reversible inversion at 300 °C. and dissociates to the zirconyl compound, (ZrO)2P2O7, at 1550°C., with the simultaneous loss of P2O5as vapor. The room‐temperature form of ZrP2O7is cubic with refractive index 1.657 ± 0.003. The zirconyl compound has a stable existence to temperatures around 1600°C. and is characterized by a very low linear thermal‐expansion

摘要:
A series of tests was conducted to determine the effect of porcelain enamels and ceramic coatings on the endurance limit and the fatigue life of ingot iron components subjected to flexure. The specimens were of the Krouse cantilever beam type. They were designed to provide a uniform bending triangle with a uniform stress throughout the test area. A completely reversed stress was applied by repeated bending in a standard motor‐driven fatigue‐testing unit. The results were plotted as S‐N curves with the stress plotted as the ordinate and the number of cycles to failure as the abscissa. A comparison of the curves for the metal alone and for the coated metal showed that ceramic coatings noticeably improved the fatigue strength and also the fatigue life at stresses above the endurance

摘要:
X‐ray and spectroscopic investigations of a variety of red‐colored silver glasses have been undertaken and an attempt has been made to explain the cause of the coloration. The absorption spectra show the presence of a band around 5017 a.u. and 5025 a.u. in borate and in phosphate glass specimens, respectively, and the silver crystallites in both phosphate and borate specimens have been identified by the X‐ray diffraction m
