A method is described for investigating the fracture properties of vitreous clay‐based ceramics. It involves indenting the specimen with a Vickers diamond in‐denter under paraffin oil and revealing the radial cracks so formed with the aid of insoluble dye particles. A densifcation algorithm for irradiated UO2fuel, modified to reflect a rapid densification rate from 0 to 10 MW.h/kg U, is presented. Included in a fuel performance code, the algorithm gives improved agreement between measured and calculated sheath strains.

Borosilicate glass and glass‐ceramic forms were prepared from simulated Savannah River Plant high‐level nuclear waste by hot isostatic pressing. A quantitative visible‐uv spectroscopic study of local structure‐sensitive electronic transitions resulting from Ni2+doped into sodium borate in the glassy and liquid states up to 1000°C was conducted using a simple windowless Pt‐cell technique with a high‐temperature spectrophotometer.
