Deuterium (heavy hydrogen) was used to trace the source of defect‐producing hydrogen in steel. The deuterium was introduced, in turn, as a replacement for protium (regular hydrogen) in the pickling acid, the milling water, the quenching water, the chemically combined water in the clay, and the dissolved water in the frit. The gases evolved during fishscaling of the coated steel specimens from each experiment were collected and analyzed for deuterium and protium with the mass spectrometer. The data showed that the principal source of defect‐producing hydrogen was the dissolved water in the frit. Experiments in which the presence or absence of lifting and fishscaling served as criteria confirmed the tracer work. An investigation was conducted to determine the bonding phenomenon in cermets after exposure at temperatures above the melting temperature of the metal. The experiments conducted with boron carbide and each of three metals showed that nickel, cobalt, and iron formed a bonding zone between the metal and the ceramic. The elevated temperature properties of a boron carbide cermet containing iron were investigated in the temperature range of 1600° to 2600°F. The properties evaluated were room‐ and elevated‐temperature modulus of rupture, resistance to fracture by thermal shock, oxidation characteristics, and density. A series of glasses in the system Na2O–SiO2–TiO2were melted. Density measurements and refractive indices were determined. Molar refractions of the various glasses were calculated using the Lorentz‐Lorenz relationship. The partial molar refraction of TiO2, as determined in glass, corresponds closely with the values obtained from crystalline compounds and indicates that the Ti4+ion exists in sixfold coordination. The crystalline nature and expansion characteristics of compositions in the region surrounding the cordierite area of the system MgO–Al2O3–SO2were investigated. The selected compositions were fired to temperatures of 1250°, 1300°, 1350°, and 1400°C., and the thermal expansion characteristics were determined with the interferometer. Coefficients of linear thermal expansion were determined in the temperature range of 20° to 300°C. and were found to lie between 9.8 ± 10–7and 50.5 ± 10–7. The qualitative, as well as the quantitative, determination of crystalline constituents was made utilizing strontium fluoride as an internal standard in the X‐ray spectrometer.
