The causes of opacification and the function of opacifiers in white ware glazes are discussed briefly. The relative covering power of tin oxide is shown to be greater than that of zircon oxide under the same conditions. The fluidity of the glaze is affected by the amount of opacifier used and can be controlled in commercial practice by the use of a simple inclined testing block.

ABSTRACTA method is described whereby nonplastic materials such as refractory oxides are given a temporary plasticity, sufficient for extrusion. The organic plastic gel used consists of flour or starch paste with ammonia as an electrolyte. A short detailed account is given of the manufacture of twin‐hole insulators made of MgO 98% and talc 2% for radio 227 vacuum tubes, with supplemental experimental results on other materials. The refractory oxides Al2O3, BeO, ZrO2, MgO, and ThO2are compared from the standpoint of their physical properties and their ability to act as insulators in contact with hot tungsten filaments. ABSTRACTA description is given of the separation of wall tile from their cement backing in a Seattle apartment hotel. Tests of the tile and delayed observations indicated that the failures were caused by an excessive shrinkage of the cement‐clay‐sand backing wall. Precautions should be taken against setting tile on a green unshrunk, flimsy, backing wall, especially when the plastered surface is over 1 inch in thickness and can shrink en bloc over large areas.
