Mycorrhization of some micropropagated clones ofPopulus albaL. withTuber magnatumPico. - Plants micropropagated from clones of white poplar (Populus albaL.) were mycorrhized withTuber magnatumPico using three inoculation techniques: the sporal suspension method, the method of putting mycorrhized root framgments in contact with roots of plants to be mycorrhized and the method of root transmission using mother plants. The mycorrhization methods were then compared. The last two methods gave the best results. An analytical description is reported of the morphological, anatomical and biometrical structures of the mycorrhizae. Some of the clones showed a great capacity to be mycorrhized with the prized white truffle.

Presented herevin are the results of research on the flora and vegetable landscape of the isola delle Bisce (NE Sardinia). The flora was found to be composed of 230 entities (1Gymnospermae,229Angiospermae) belonging to 47 families and included in 156 genera. Failure to find numerous species is underscored and an overview of the vegetation landscape based on aerial photography is presented, with the identification of the vegetation formations and sites on the islands most sensitive to anthropic impact.

A survey of planktonic dinoflagellates and related cysts was carried out in the Gulf of Trieste throughout one year from April 1992 to March 1993. 113 taxa were recovered by the analysis of phytoplankton net samples. The most represented genera wereProtoperidinium(34 species),Ceratium(24 species),Dinophysis(15 species),Gonyaulax(11 species) andProrocentrum(8 species). A particular attention was given to potentially toxic species belonging to the generaDinophysis, AlexandriumandProrocentrum.The highest number of species (67 species) was recorded in July, and the lowest one (18 species) in February.

Cytological examination during somatic embryogenesis inIris pumilaL. andIris setosaPall, were performed using light and electron microscopy. The first sign of the cellular differentiation in the initial embryogenic callus (EC; stage 1) of bothIrisspecies was the formation of short and elongated cell types. After the onset of embryogenesis, short cells divided producing a mass of densely packed meristematic cells, closely connected with numerous plasmodesmata. Further differentiation into globular embryos (GE) led to a loss of plasmodesmata and cell separation. In vacuolated elongated cells, cytoplasm was located near the wall and around the nucleus. In both cell types amyloplasts and small mitochondria with poorly developed crystae were abundant.

In this study we have reported some results of the fungal colonization in the litter of different plants of the National Park of Tai (Ivory Coast). We have also examined the correlations between the fungal species and the vegetable matrix in order to detect a saprotrophic specialization.

The results of a study on the benthic macroalgal flora and vegetation of Terra Nova Bay (Ross Sea) carried out during the Italian expeditions to Antarctica made in the years 1987/88, 1989/90 and 1993/94, are presented. The flora is rather poor (9 Rhodophyceae, 4 Fucophyceae, 4 Chlorophyceae), but richer than that known from adjacent areas. The vegetation is on the whole characterized by a prevalence of sciaphilous species among whichIridaea cordata, Phyllophora antarcticaandClathromorphum lemoineanumdominating in the upper infralittoral, lower infralittoral and circalittoral zones, respectively. Moreover, the results of a study on biomass of a population ofI. cordataas well as of a population ofP. antarctica,carried out in the austral summer 1993/94, are reported too. The values of the biomass of the population ofI. cordataresulted to vary inversely with respect to those of the population ofP. antarctica.
