The sharp increase in Java's population after 1830 is usually explained in terms of higher living standards and consequent lower mortality resulting from Dutch colonization, but there is little historical evidence supporting such an interpretation and much to refute it. An alternative view is that Java's population growth after 1830 was due to increasing fertility. The major constraint on Javanese fertility prior to this period had been extended periods of postpartum absistence, the length of which was determined by the duration of breastfeeding because people believed semen had deleterious effects on breast milk. In 1830 a system of forced cultivation of export crops was imposed by the Dutch rulers and greatly increased the amount of labour which Javanese households required to reproduce themselves. The arduous work women began to undertake made it increasingly difficult to breastfeed their children. As the average period of breastfeeding fell, the average period of postpartum abstinence declined and fertility increased.

This paper was inspired by participant observation in the Coalfields towns of the Hunter Valley in New South Wales. It is an attempt to demonstrate the significance of violence in the political practice of coal‐miners. This significance has been overlooked in the recent enthusiasm for studies of ‘dominant ideologies’. Interpretations of political and economic organization in ethnographic accounts often depend on assumptions about or estimates of the relation between a population and the area it inhabits and/or exploits. While some attention has been given to factors contributing to the unreliability of demographic data in anthropology, less has been directed to the possible unreliability of information on land area. The purpose of this paper is to present an illustrative example of such unreliability. It also, as a consequence, provides updated information on an ethnographically much studied area, the island of Kiriwina, which is not as big as earlier accounts would have it nor as small as later ethnographies suggest.

This is a study of bone discard at a contemporary archaeological site. It assesses the accumulation of bones in the face of destruction by scavenging animals. Three per cent by numbers and two per cent by weight of discarded bones survived to be collected in a six month study period. It is suggested that patterns of scattering by scavengers may help in the interpretation of prehistoric sites, and in particular may allow the prediction of attrition of bone by dogs.
