摘要:
This paper argues the need to redress an imbalance in the analysis of ritual in which emphasis on symbolic content of performances has outweighed consideration of its stereo‐typic and behavioural aspects. Claiming that the ritualization of behaviour has deeper roots than its symbolic elaborations, it seeks illumination from some of the work of Freud on obsessional and compulsive behaviour, and suggests some avenues for continuing analysi

摘要:
The conventional view that the 1971 Sri Lankan insurrection was a highly organized and centrally directed attempt by a Marxist conspiratorial party (Janata Vimukti Peramuna) to seize State power is both partial and incomplete. Partial, because it incorporates the urban bias inherent in Political Science and thus ignores significant aspects of the insurrection, such as the purely rural locus of the fighting. Incomplete, because it requiresad hocexplanations to account for the supposed success of the JVP in attracting rural supporters. An alternative interpretation, based on fieldwork at the time, is that the insurrection was the product of post‐war processes of rural class formatio

摘要:
Views of pre‐contact Aboriginal social groupings have ranged from those which posit a linguistically‐defined, homogeneous ‘tribe’ to others which, more recently, have asserted that language plays little or no role in Aboriginal constructions of social identity. Given the obvious, different degrees of linguistic diversity in different parts of the continent, it seems of interest to look at native linguistic ideologies and the ways in which notions of language and linguistic difference are integrated with other variables in the construction of social identity. This paper begins to look at differential constructions of social identity in three parts of Australia—Cape Keerweer in Cape York, the Western Desert, and western Roper River and suggests some directions for future

摘要:
Testart's hypothesis is placed in historical perspective. The Kaiabara case study, prominent in Testart's paper but of illustrative significance rather than as proof in his book, is discussed. Testart's mathematical analysis of the degree of coherence between the classifications of societies with patrimoieties as against those with matrimoieties provides an interesting means of reaching inferences about the evolution of social organization, although the required quantification involves some difficulties. Testart's further major contribution to the understanding of moiety organization is his proposed principle of classification based on the violator/non‐violator diachotomy. He shows this principle to be more consistent with matrilineal than with patrilineal classifications. It is argued that the Eagle‐Crow Myth, from which Testart derives the violator‐non‐violator diachotomy, refers to the Oedipal conflict, and that this is related to the formation of matrilineal moieties. It is further suggested that the taboo on blood, central to the ‘violator’ concept, is connected with mat

摘要:
Analysis of certain discussions in Tasmanian prehistory reveals a tacit but strong environmental determinism. This approach, which centres on the notion of cultural adaptation, dominates current research in Australian prehistory. Recent theoretical discussions have, however, shown that the ecological approach is untenable; it is suggested that neo‐marxist economic anthropology, emphasizing social rather than ecological relations, provides an alternative. The interpretation of archaeological data in social terms is a problem, but it should be dealt with rather than ignored. A further difficulty arises from the epistemological framework within which most archaeological work has operated: this is simplistic and empiricist. Greater consideration needs to be given to the role of theory in, and the social context of knowledg
