The Yemen fauna comprises six artiodactyle species, two of which are extinct viz.Oryx leucoryxandGazella bilkis; two more species (Gazella dorcas saudiyaandG. subgutturosa) are probably extinct, or on the brink of extinction.Gazella gazella coraandCapra ibex nubianahave become very rare and need immediate protection. Further studies are necessary to clarify the current status of these species. The urgent conservation priorities of Yemen include the establishment of protected areas, captive breeding sites and re-introduction measures.

The reproduction and development of the Arabian Leopard,Panthera pardus nimr, as determined in captivity, is similar to other subspecies although not previously documented and important from a captive breeding perspective. The following reproductive data was determined: inter-oestrus period 32.2 days; oestrus period 6.9 days; gestation period 97.5 days; mean number of cubs 1.25; cubs eyes open after 7.5 days.

A survey of the distribution of Cape Hares (Lepus capensis) throughout the Emirate of Abu Dhabi was carried out based on the presence or absence of faecal pellets. Evidence of the presence of hares was found throughout the Emirate, however, their distribution was patchy and appeared to be affected by the level of grazing by domesticated animals and by anthropogenic disturbance. Hare droppings were most abundant in grazing exclosures and least abundant in areas subjected to heavy grazing pressure.

The karyotypes of seven specimens ofApodemus agrariusfrom İğneada in Thrace (European Turkey) were examined. The results showed that the diploid number of chromosomes is 2n = 48, the number of autosomal arms NFa = 56, and the fundamental number NF = 58. The X chromosome is large acrocentric and the Y chromosome is small acrocentric. It was found that one subtelocentric pair in the chromosome set ofA. agrariusis different from that of European populations.

TheNational Avian Research Center’sSaker Falcon Conservation Program is mainly concerned with the captive breeding and monitoring of the Saker Falcon (Falco cherrug), but also carries out breeding and research on other species, including the Peregrine (F. peregrinus), Gyr (F. rusticolus), Gyr/Saker and Gyr/Peregrine hybrid falcons. For studies on wild birds and for the early imprinting of captive birds for artificial insemination techniques, the ability to accurately identify their sex would be of great value. Although adult falcons can be sexed through reversed size dimorphism, chicks and juveniles prove more difficult. Therefore, a previously described PCR technique was applied employing two primers (P2 and P3) followed by site-specific restriction digestion to sex the Saker, Peregrine, Gyr and Gyr/Saker hybrid falcons. Using these methods, distinctive patterns are apparent for males and females making it possible to accurately identify their sex.

Twenty-four Green Turtles (Chelonia mydas) were caught by hadra intertidal fish traps during the winters of 1995 to 1998 near Doha, northern Kuwait. Two died and were preserved, while the others were released. During this period actively swimming turtles were reported from the waters around Mis’chan island in January 1997. This is the first report of turtles entering the intertidal areas of northern Kuwait and of them actively swimming in the cold winter months when water temperatures drop to just above 10°C. Hawksbill Turtles (Eretmochelys imbricata) and Loggerhead Turtles (Caretta caretta) were recorded from Kuwait for the first time.

Subsurface sand temperatures were recorded at nest depth at Akyatan, the main nesting beach ofChelonia mydasin the Mediterranean Sea, and correlated with spatio-temporal nest distribution. This was to estimate primary sex ratio, which is dependent on the temperature of the environment of the eggs. On the basis of these data, the likelihood of metabolic warming during the thermosensitive period, and the pivotal temperature ofC. mydasestimated from another Mediterranean nesting site (Cyprus), it is concluded that a majority of females is produced in the study area. This conclusion is also supported by data on incubation periods.

91 specimens of the Marsh or Lake FrogRana ridibundafrom the vicinity of Kapıkargın Village (Dalaman, Muğla province, Turkey) were investigated morphometrically and from the viewpoint of colouration and colour pattern. While the specimens were found to be identical morphometrically withRana ridibunda, the venter of 87% of the specimens was more or less covered with fine black or yellow warts, which is not known from elsewhere in Turkey.
