摘要:
In the course of a study carried out in the Wassit, Dyala and Taamim provinces of Iraq between November 1993 and February 1994, it was found thatTatera indicacontinued its breeding even during winter. The pregnancy rates ranged between 42.9 and 66.7% and the mean numbers of embryos ranges between 7.2 and 8.0 litters/female. An outbreak of this gerbil was recorded in Iraq and the possible factors leading to it are discussed in this study.

摘要:
During a study of foxes and other carnivores in a fenced protected area in Saudi Arabia, three attacks by Ratel(Mellivora capensis wilsoni)were made on Rüppell’s and Arabian Red Foxes(Vulpes rüppelli sabeaandV. vulpes arabica)detained in cage traps. This note describes the circumstances of the attacks, gives a detailed necropsy report for one fox and evaluates the potential the Ratel presents as a predator of foxes.

摘要:
The taxonomic status and diagnostic characteristics ofMeriones tristrami blackleri, M. t. lycaon, M. t. intraponticus, M. t. bodenheimeriandM. t. bogdanoviare discussed, based on material collected in Turkey. According to biomeţric and morphological comparisons, the specimens from southeastern and eastern Anatolia were found to be closer tobodenheimeriandbogdanovithan tolycaon. The white tail tip ofblackleri, the dorsal colour and baculum shape oflycaon, the white incisors ofintraponticus, and the short hind foot and the ear length ofbodenheimeriare characteristics that distinguish these taxa from one other. The diploid number of chromosomes is 72 inM. tristrami. However, the fundamental number is 76 inblackleriand 82 inlycaon, intraponticusandbodenheimeri.

摘要:
The diet composition of the Barn Owl,Tyto alba, was studied in the area of Al-Sareeh in northern Jordan. With over 55% of all food items,Merlones tristramiwas the predominant prey. A comparison with other diet analyses in the Middle East showed that the Barn Owl is an extremely opportunistic feeder, foraging on a wide spectrum of animals as they become available.

摘要:
Habitat associations and communities of breeding birds were studied for the first time in a semi-arid region in the southern highlands of Jordan. Birds were censused and habitat variables estimated in different habitat types, ranging from steppe to open, Mediterranean-type woodland. The variation of abundance of several species was explained adequately with multiple regressions of up to five habitat variables. A distinct bird community was identified by using principal component analysis on the highland plateau (e.g. Short-toed Lark, Isabelline Wheatear), in steppe habitats modified by dry farming methods. The plateau was identified as a transition zone of Palaeoxeric/Turkestanian and Mediterranean faunal types. The remainding cluster included species of diverse origins (Palaearctic, Mediterranean, Saharo-Sindian, Afrotropical and others). It was subdivided into three bird assemblages with preferences for following habitat types: Mediterranean-type open woodlands (e.g. Syrian Serin), dwarf shrub formations of higher altitudes (e.g. Spectacled Warbler), dwarf shrub formations, including clearings and the edge of woodlands at lower altitudes (e.g. Scrub Warbler).

摘要:
A survey of the levels of marine turtle bycatch in the small-boat based fisheries in northern Cyprus and the Turkish Mediterranean (Alanya to Mersin) was undertaken by questioning a sample of fishermen (n = 54) in all harbours in the survey region. Fishermen in Turkey caught an estimated 2.5 turtles/boat/yearversusan estimated 4.0 turtles/boat/year in Cyprus. This yielded a likely minimum bycatch estimate of over 2,000 marine turtles per year in the region. An estimated 10% of turtles were thought to be dead at the point of capture. Turtles were caught in both nets and on long-lines and were perceived as detrimental to the livelihood of fishermen either by damaging nets, spoiling catch or removing bait. Although few fishermen admitted to deliberately killing turtles, a larger proportion thought others did so. Given the likelihood that a proportion of sea turtles caught will be Green Turtles(Chelonia mydas), and due to the highly endangered status of this species in this region, interaction with these fisheries is thought to constitute a real threat to marine turtles in the eastern Mediterranean.

摘要:
Two specimens of the Levantine Viper,Macrovipera lebetina, were discovered in the vicinity of Al-Karak, Jordan. This extends the known range of the species considerably to the south. The specimens are described and zoogeographic implications are discussed.

摘要:
New records of the Leatherback Turtle (Dermochelys coriacea) are reported from the Turkish Mediterranean and Aegean coasts, increasing the total number of records in Turkey to six. It is suggested that the species occurs more or less regularly in the eastern Mediterranean.
