An ophiolite is an association of igneous and metamorphic rocks, including basalts, dolerites, gabbros and peridotites, which may be a fragment of crust and mantle formed by spreading at a ridge beneath an ancient ocean. This remarkable conclusion is supported by many features of the structure, field relationships, petrology and geochemistry of ophiolites. Although recent research has led to a degree of disillusionment with the idea that ophiolites are fragments of typical ocean floor, these rocks have a good deal to tell us about processes of ocean floor construction and mountain building.

Over the last decade, palaeontologists around the world have been striving to understand one of the most remarkable episodes in the fossil record: the explosive evolution of skeletal fossils around the Precambrian–Cambrian boundary. When examined in the field, the close association of geological and biological events is apparent. An important succession in this respect is the classic Precambrian and Cambrian area of Charnwood–Nuneaton in the English Midlands. Chalk is not the sort of rock that you would expect to yield oil. Although it has a high porosity when first formed, the permeability is low. Even the porosity is normally much reduced under overburdens of more than 1000 m. Yet in the North Sea there are special conditions that allow major reservoirs in the Chalk beneath thousands of metres of Tertiary sediments.
