Two recent databases show that the fossil record of insects is better than commonly supposed, comprising over 1000 families and 5000 genera. Insects (hexapods) first appeared in the Devonian, but by the Permian the number of orders present was similar to that of the present day. However, family data suggest an unsteady increase in diversity during the Phanerozoic, with four main peaks and troughs but no sudden change (supported by genera) at the Cretaceous/Tertiary transition.

Much effort has been expended in recent years on determining the factors influencing calcite cementation of sandstones, partly out of academic curiosity and partly because of the important influence these cements have on production from hydrocarbon reservoirs. Calcite cementation may occur pervasively throughout a sandstone sequence or be concentrated in certain horizons within which growth may be as concretions. We are only now beginning to understand the factors governing the growth and distribution of carbonate concretions in sandstones.

Geology is primarily afield study, and no matter what information is collected from detailed study of hand specimens and thin sections in the laboratory, this must be related to the outcrops in order to develop a geological interpretation of a sequence of rocks. Here we focus on the type of information that should be collected when studying sedimentary rocks in the field, and highlight the main techniques employed.
