The geology of Antarctica is similar in many respects to that of the other southern continents that once formed the larger continent of Gondwana. Because of this former union with other land masses, mineral resources in Antarctica are probable, but none of any significance have been found, perhaps because of the widespread cover (97%) of ice over the continent. Offshore oil and gas are presently unknown, but would seem to hold the best prospect for any development in the near future, but perhaps not until questions of sovereignty and ownership of potential resources are resolved.

The fossil fish found so beautifully preserved in the Middle Devonian Achanarras Fish Bed of northern Scotland drifted to their final resting place following mass mortalities caused by deoxygenation of lake waters.

Recent research into layered intrusions (intrusive bodies in which there are layers of different mineralogical composition) provides an interesting example of ‘role–reversal’. Traditionally, crystal settling has been regarded as the main agent of differentiation, with magma convection as a useful subsidiary factor. Now the behaviour of the fluid phase – before, during and after the main crystallisation period – is assuming increasing importance, even to the extent of eliminating the need for crystal settling altogether. The protection and long‐term safeguarding of geological localities are fundamental to the continuation of fieldwork, both now and in the future. The responsibility for these lies with the Nature Conservancy Council, the government agency charged with protecting geological and biological sites. Part of the work of the Council's Geology Branch is concerned with creating or re‐exposing geological localities which are of value for teaching or collecting; and in the article which follows, Keith Duff explains the background and methods of this work, using the recently established geological trail at Salthill Quarry in Lancashire as as example.
