摘要:
At the recent ‘Factories in 2001 AD’ conference in London, two speakers pushed the case for integration in companies. One gave advice on how to develop a computer integrated manufacturing (CIM) strategy, while the other stressed that organisational barriers present in many companies should be broken down and closer links between departments should be encouraged. Rory Baxter was at the conference.

摘要:
Saloon cars are being produced by Saab of Sweden in increasing numbers, which has led to ill-health in many operators as the volume of components increases. An automatic handling system with limited manpower that could cope with the increased volumes seems to be the answer. We report.

摘要:
The continuing SERC co-ordinated programme on grinding discussed the various developments in this technology at a recent seminar held at the MTIRA, Macclesfield. Duncan Holland highlights some of the results, principally the work carried out at Birmingham University on adaptive control of grinding processes.

摘要:
Money has been made available for BL Technology of Longbridge to build and run a flexible assembly system (FAS) for possible use in assembling car components. The ‘backbone’ of the FAS will be an IBM RS/1 robotic system. Rory Baxter visited the Longbridge works.

摘要:
As the general reserve and suspicion that surround robots diminish, so, more and more companies are offering various systems for automated manufacture. As part of our robotics feature, Duncan Holland surveys some of the latest developments available in this country. These include training and educational units as well as spray painting, welding and injection moulding robots.
