This study examines the proportion of deaths from major diseases among Michigan Vietnam veterans. The distribution of deaths among Michigan Vietnam veterans was compared to deaths among veterans serving elsewhere for 1974–1989 to generate a proportionate mortality ratio (PMR). PMRs were estimated overall and for Black versus non-Black veterans. Overall, Vietnam veterans had significantly elevated PMRs for infectious and parasitic diseases and endocrine disease and lower PMRs for all malignant neoplasms combined. Vietnam veterans overall and non-Blacks specifically had elevated PMRs for non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. Black Vietnam veterans had elevated PMRs for cancer of the digestive organs, peritoneum, and pancreas. The elevated PMR for non-Hodgkin's lymphoma is consistent with results of individuals exposed to phenoxy herbicides. Results suggest that future studies should examine risks among racial groups separately.

摘要:
This article presents the results of a study of the determinants of adherence level in an employee fitness program. Of all 236 employees who started participating in the program the determinants of level of participation (high adherence, low adherence, and dropouts) during the program were studied by means of a pretest and posttest design. The questionnaire was based on different theoretical concepts. The determinants measured included the attitude toward an employee fitness program, self-efficacy expectation, and social support. The results show that there were no differences in determinants between the groups at the start of the program. During the second measurement the high- and low-adherence groups were most convinced of the benefits of participation in the program. The low-adherence group and the dropouts were least convinced of their ability to participate in a fitness program. Theoretical and practical implications are discussed.

摘要:
We evaluated 44 patients with carpal tunnel syndrome and performed histological evaluations of tenosynovium taken at the time of carpal tunnel release. Age, disease and work history, radiographs, and outcome were assessed. The clinical parameters were then compared with the histologic features to determine if the histology was predictive of the clinical course of carpal tunnel syndrome. We found no significance in the histologic changes in patients with carpal tunnel syndrome when age, duration of symptoms, work history, radiographs, and outcome were evaluated.
