AbstractSome iterative multi‐level approaches for solving large‐scale finite‐element elliptic problems are proposed. AbstractExplicit formulas for correcting finite‐element predictions of natural frequencies are presented for longitudinal, torsional and bending vibrations of beams. By employing these simple explicit formulas the finite‐element discretization error in the natural frequency predictions can be effectively reduced at almost no computational cost. For longitudinal and torsional vibrations the frequency correction always yields the exact solution, while for the bending vibration it gives a significant improvement over the uncorrected frequencies. AbstractThe paper reports some numerical experiments on the effectivity of the Zienkiewicz–Zhu error estimate (1987) and comparisons of two adaptive mesh generators: ADMESH, developed by Jin and Wiberg (1990) and MAD2D by Peraireet al.(1987) and Zhuet al.(1990–91).
