摘要:
AbstractConventional signal processing and display of information obtained by ultrasonic scanning results in the loss of low level information which may be diagnostically valuable by demonstrating the internal structure of organs. The use of grey scale echography preserves this information, allowing visualization of the normal tissue patterns and the minimal deviations from these which can indicate early pathology. This technique supplements radioisotope scanning since it has greater resolution. The method may be particularly valuable in evaluating the effect of therapy on liver metastases.

AbstractThe echocardiographic patterns of increased right ventricular dimension and abnormal septal motion were observed in a patient with a large pelvic arterio‐venous (A‐V) shunt and no associated cardiac lesion. Although there was evidence of incomplete closure of the shunt four months after surgery, the right ventricular dimension had returned to normal but abnormal septal motion persisted. While these echocardiographic findings cannot be attributed specifically to the shunt in this patient, such a lesion should be considered in patients with these echocardiographic patterns and no cardiac abnormal

AbstractBetween February 1970 and December 1971, 200 premature infants with birth weights of up to 2500 g were examined echoencephalographically within 48 hours of birth. The third ventricle and the brain‐mantle‐index (BMI) were determined. It was statistically proved that with increasing weight, advancing gestational age and growth of head circumference, the width of the third ventricle diminishes. The breadth of the third ventricle in premature infants and so‐called “small‐for‐date‐infants” was found to be essentially the same. An enlarged width of the third ventricle in cases of low birth weight and low gestational age, could possibly represent a physiological phase. BMI and third ventricle correlated closely. AbstractM‐scanning was found useful in eight patients in whom the diagnosis of pericardial effusion was negative or equivocal with conventional echocardiography. With the patient in the semi‐recumbent position, the records were obtained while the ultrasound beam was sector scanned base toward the cardiac apex. With this technique, a separation of the posterior pericardium epicardium by a divergent echo‐free space was noted when pericardial effusion was present. The divergent nature of the echo‐free space was due to accumulation of pericardial fluid toward the cardiac apex. The shift of pericardial fluid toward the cardiac apex was further demonstrated by elevation of the patient supine to the semi‐recumbent position. AbstractThis study deals with the ultrasonic analysis of tumors of the liver and involves 85 cases of anatomically confirmed neoplasms. We shall describe four specific patterns of cancer: the large, highly echogenic nodule, anechoic nodules surrounded by a band of echoes, which correspond to necrotic, metastatic nuclei; the indistinct, transonic region within in echogenic parenchyma, often found in cancers observed in the course of cirrhosis; the large, entirely homogeneous hepatomegaly, which is the normal pattern of primary cancers, but which can be mistaken for a fluid collection. We consider that accurate information about these patterns may lead to a more reliable and precise diagnosis.

AbstractThis study was undertaken to determine whether sonication of the ovaries on day 8 of pregnancy would alter fetal development in the rat. Mating was confirmed by the presence of sperm (day 1 of gestation) in the vaginal smear, and the rats were grouped and treated on day 8 as follows: Group I (controls) had both ovaries surgically exposed to sonic gel for 10 min/ovary; group II received 10 watts/cm2temporal peak intensity of pulsed ultrasound through the body wall for 10 min/ovary; group III received 100 watts/cm2in a similar manner as group II; group IV was treated the same as group III except the ultrasound was applied directly to the surgically exposed ovaries. The frequency employed was 1.9 mHz. The animals were sacrificed on days 15–17, implantation sites and resorptions were counted, and fetal viability was determined. AbstractDiagnostic ultrasound provides the radiation therapist a very practical method of acquiring anatomical information for developing optimized radiation therapy plans. With ultrasound it is possible to record simultaneously the contour of the patient and the location and depth of tumors and normal structures. This information can easily be incorporated into current methods of computerized treatment planning. Ultrasound examination also assists in the accurate placement of treatment ports on the body surface, and allows adjustment of field size as tumors respond to treatment. It is predicted that diagnostic ultrasound examination will become a standard method of obtaining anatomical information for radiation therapy planning in all modern radiation treatment facilities.

AbstractDiagnostic ultrasound affords important information about cardiac structure and motion. However, because of the unique manner in which data are acquired and displayed during echocardiography, diagnostic errors and misinterpretations are not uncommon. This paper discusses the characteristic echocardiographic patterns of a variety of important cardiac conditions: mitral stenosis and mitral regurgitation, aortic regrugitation, idio‐pathic hypertrophic subaortic stenosis, left atrial myxoma, pericardial effusion and right ventricular volume overload. Potential pitfalls in achieving the correct diagnosis in each of these conditions are emphasized, with illustrative examples of correct and incorrect interpretations. Good technique and appropriate clinical correlation are important in the performance of accurate ultrasound cardiac examination
