AbstractIn quantitative measurements of the attenuation of ultrasound in 18 samples of variously normal, benign, and malignant breast tissue, we found significantly different ranges of attenuation. As observed in previousin vivostudies, with the exception of medullary carcinoma, malignant tissue produces the most attentuation of ultrasound in the frequency range of 1.5 to 3.0 MHz we employed. The apparatus, measurement method, results, and the possible causes of the differences in attenuation are presented.

AbstractA pulse burst generator is utilized in which the pulses are triggered by the transmitter pulse of the ultrasound system being tested. The pulses are spaced the equivalent of every 2 mm in the body, and their amplitude decays with 0, 1.25, or 2.5 dB/cm over greater than a 50 dB dynamic range. By replacing the ultrasound transducer with the pulse generator, one can record quite easily the accuracy of depth gain compensation (DGC) and of distance measurements in A mode and B mode. If the DGC on the ultrasound unit can be turned to zero, the unit's A mode display characteristic and B mode gray scale curve can be determined rapidly and the receiver gain control or attenuator can be calibrated. AbstractTwenty‐one patients were investigated with ultrasound for the diagnosis of liver metastases. The most common specific appearnces of liver metastases encountered in this series were echogenic nodules and transsonic areas within an echogenic parenchyma. AbstractB mode ultrasound can be used to evaluate intrathoracic masses that contact the chest wall. It provides a noninvasive technique to distinguish cystic from solid lesions and to assess the internal structure. Four cases are reported in which this procedure was used to provide diagnostic information.

AbstractPulsed Doppler ultrasound blood flow detection has been used in a noninvasive manner to detect arterial abnormalities associated with arteriosclerosis. Sound spectrograms of ultrasound signals obtained fromin uitroand animal studies in which flow was disturbed by obstacles placed in the flow stream showed a different distribution of energy over frequency than signals obtained from studies with no flow disturbances. Similar findings were seen clinically. A technique has been developed which can detect disturbed flow patterns resulting from partial occlusion in important superficial arteries (e.g. femoral and carotid) up to 15 cm distal to localized arterial wall abnormalities. Thirty‐five arterial examinations of normal and arteriographically abnormal arteries in 12 patients revealed a sensitivity of 83 percent and a specificity of 61 percent. AbstractA group of patients with anterior position of the lower pole of the right kidney were examined with ultrasound to evaluate a palpable right upper quadrant mass. After it was determined, with the use of ultrasound, that the palpable mass represented the kidney, no further evaluations were necessary. This appearance is seen fairly often in normal individuals and should be considered a normal variant. The possible anatomic explanation for this appearance is discussed.
