AbstractHip fracture patients typify a population at high risk to develop deep vein thrombosis (DVT). Recently ultrasound has been used successfully to diagnose DVT when clinical suspicion exists. In this prospective study, 88 hip fracture patients asymptomatic for DVT were screened serially with compression ultrasound to assess the development of thrombus within the femoral or popliteal systems. Contrast venography was employed as a control. Twelve of the 76 patients (16%) completing the study were noted by ultrasound to have a clot. Venography confirmed a clot in each case and detected no additional femoral or popliteal clot. The possibility of utilizing ultrasound to screen additional high risk groups for DVT should be investigated based on the encouraging results of this series.

AbstractPregnancy can be detected early using transvaginal ultrasonography and human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) measurements. The purpose of this study was to correlate serum hCG levels with transvaginal gestational sac measurements. The mean sac diameter (MSD) and gestational sac diameter (GSD) were calculated as the mean and cube root of the product, repsectively, of three sac dimensions taken at right angles. A nonlinear relationship between hCG (natural logarithm) and MSD and GSD was observed. The data were best fitted by a second order polynomial regression model (r2= 0.98), thereby establishing normal hCG levels for various gestational sac dimensions in early pregnancy.

AbstractFifty patients with 81 abdominal hydatid cysts were followed with ultrasound during and after treatment with albendazole. In 61 cysts (75%), regressive changes were observed after treatment. Detachment of the membrane and change to a solid pattern in anechoic cysts were observed. Disappearance of septa or change to a solid pattern in anechoic cysts with intracystic septation were also found. There was an increase of hyperechoic structures in cysts with a mixed pattern. Follow‐up ultrasound examination showed disappearance of 7 cysts, while anechoic structures reappeared in five cases. AbstractIn 1300 Doppler assessments performed on the fetal cerebral arteries, 5 cases of heart rate deceleration were recorded while studying the middle cerebral artery. There were 3 normal fetuses (mean menstrual age ± standard deviation: 28.6 ± 2.1 weeks), one growth‐retarded fetus (34 weeks, menstrual age) and 1 fetus with red cell alloimmunization (27 weeks, menstrual age). The magnitude of decline in the heart rate during the deceleration ranged from 44 to 93 bpm (67 ± 18 bpm). Pulsatility index values were calculated on 44 waveforms and correlated with the heart rate. Linear regression analysis showed a statistically significant inverse correlation between the heart rate and the pulsatility index in the middle cerebral artery of 4 fetuses.
