AbstractHamsters with subcutaneous fibrosarcomas were treated by excision and by exposure to 5‐MHz ultrasound for six minutes at an intensity of 3 W/sq cm. Rates for successful elimination of the tumors were between 80% and 90% and were not significantly different for the two methods of treatment. After 30 days, the animals were challenged with the same tumor cells. Animals successfully treated with ultrasound or excision required at least 10 times as many cells to produce a tumor as controls, indicating that eradication of the tumor by ultrasound induced a level of transplant immunity at least as good as that resulting from surgical excisio

AbstractIn order to determine the sensitivity and reproducibility of a new two‐dimensional echocardiographic technique for detecting left ventricular aneurysms, 16 patients suspected of having aneurysms were evaluated prospectively. Left ventricular angiography demonstrated aneurysms in 15 of the 16 patients. All 15 were detected by two‐dimensional echocardiography but three were identified only in a view rotated 45 degrees clockwise from the apical four‐chamber view. The analysis of 16 wall segments for each patient showed excellent agreement between two observers. AbstractUltrasound findings in pelvic examinations of 80 patients with a previous hysterectomy are evaluated. Ovaries were located low in the pelvis close to the superior end of the vagina in a large number of patients. An enlarged ovary contiguous with the superior end of the vagina may simulate the appearance of the uterus. Occasionally, the superior end of the vagina or cervical remnant (in patients with a supracervical hysterectomy) may be prominent and should not be mistaken for a pathologic mass.

AbstractSerial echographic evaluation of the uterine wound after lower uterine segment caesarean section was performed on 48 puerperal patients. Similar examinations after vaginal delivery were carried out on 14 puerperal patients. The aim of this study was to determine whether evidence of abnormal healing could be detected by this method. Although three distinctive patterns were noted, no correlation with clinical findings could be made and no conclusions could be drawn.

AbstractThis paper stresses the value of transabdominal ultrasound that utilizes basic ultrasound equipment in evaluating the size of the prostate. We performed ultrasound examinations on 43 patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia, and in 33 of these, sonography was done prior to surgery in an effort to compare the size of the prostate estimated by ultrasound with that of the postoperative specimen. In the vast majority of these patients, the difference between the estimated size and that of the specimen was insignificant. Ultrasound examination is easy, fast, noninvasive and reasonably accurate.
