AbstractAbdominal and vaginal sonographic monitoring were compared in 45 patients undergoing follicular development for the purposes of artificial insemination (N = 22) and in vitro fertilization (IVF; N = 23). Transvaginal sonography recorded a significantly (p<0.05) higher number of follicles from cycle day 10 on, compared to the abdominal (sector and linear) approach. Starting on day 8, the size of the dominant follicle was also significantly (p15 mm on the day of human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) administration was correlated with the number of oocytes retrieved in patients undergoing IVF. There was a significant linear correlation when transvaginal (r= 0.86,p<0.001) and sector (r= 0.57,p<0.05) scans were used.

AbstractThe ultrasonographic appearance of different plastic catheters, tubes, and prostheses used in medical practice were tested in vivo and in vitro. According to the direction of the sound beam, the different plastic catheters and tubes appeared as parallel echogenic lines if scanned longitudinally, or as echogenic dots if scanned transversely. The exact position of the tip of the catheter and its relationship to neighboring organs can be established by ultrasonography. Repositioning of tubes, if necessary, can be done under ultrasonographic guidance. The flexibility and mobility of modern ultrasound scanners allows one to examine the sick patient with minimal disturbance, and to evaluate the location and effect of the various plastic catheters and tubes inserted into the body for medical reasons.

AbstractGallbladder wall thickness (GBWT) and serum albumin were determined in 54 patients with ascites. The statistical analysis of the results reveals a significant difference in GBWT between benign and malignant conditions (p<0.01). GBWT was significantly thicker in patients with cirrhosis than in those with malignant ascites (p<0.01) and other benign conditions. However, no significant differences were found between either cirrhotic cases with and without overlying hepatocarcinoma, or between noncirrhotic patients, malignant or otherwise. On comparing GBWT and simple routine sonography in establishing the etiology of ascites, the diagnostic reliability indices decreased with GBWT. This shows that GBWT determination lacks diagnostic importance in routine practice.No correlation was found between serum albumin and GBWT, which suggests that the increase in GBWT observed in cirrhotic patients is mainly the result of accompanying portal hypertension.

AbstractSixty‐two cases of intrauterine hematoma (IUH) with a live fetus have been described. This condition was found in 11% of cases that presented with bleeding in early pregnancy. The rate of spontaneous abortion in this series was 12.9%, similar to that observed in cases of threatened abortion without observable hematoma. Spontaneous abortion and delivery rate before 35 weeks of pregnancy were correlated with the calculated volume of the hematoma. Fetal growth retardation seemed to be increased after observation of IUH, especially when the placenta was located on the posterior uterine wall.
