AbstractImprovements in ultrasound technology have now made possible detailed visualization of fetal intracranial anatomy. Structures such as the midbrain, thalami, and lateral ventricles can be routinely imaged. Measurements of the ratio between lateral ventricular width and cerebral hemispheric width demonstrate a steady decrease from a mean of 56% at 15 wk gestation to 28% at term reflecting the relatively more rapid growth of the cerebral hemispheres as compared with the cerebral ventricles. Application of this new ultrasound data greatly facilitates accurate and consistent biparietal diameter estimations and early diagnosis of fetal hydrocephalus and other fetal cranial anomalies. This article describes the axial fetal cranial anatomy as demonstrated sonically and includes a table for normal fetal ventricular size at various gestational ages, based on evaluation of 196 normal fetuses. Some of the more common fetal cranial anomalies amenable to ultrasound diagnosis in utero are discussed.

AbstractTo date, there have been 25 studies attempting to correlate biparietal diameter and gestational age; of these, 17 meet specific criteria and thus are included in this evaluation. Although all studies have shown an increase in biparietal diameter with advancing gestational age, between 17 wk and term there is a discrepancy of approximately 3 wk. In this evaluation the charts are compared and the variations analyzed. An ideal table is constructed by combining the mean gestational age, calculated from a statistical analysis, and the variation at each millimeter point, determined by comparison of all the studies. It is hoped that this new 90% composite table, which consists of a range of gestational ages in weeks for each biparietal diameter, will not only provide more realistic indications of fetal age but also will serve as a reminder to sonographers, obstetricians, and patients of the relative accuracy and variations of biparietal diameter measurements.

AbstractThis report describes an improved and convenient method of obtaining echocardiograms from the precordial surface of the closed‐chest conscious dog. All major cardiac structures were identified using contrast echocardiography. Anatomic relations and the orientation of cardiac structures to the ultrasound transducer in the position of study were established by postmortem examinations. Good quality echocardiograms were obtained from nine of 11 conscious dogs. Highly significant correlations were found when comparing left ventricular systolic time intervals measured from simultaneous echo and pressure recordings. This method has advantages over other echo techniques; namely, elimination of surgical intervention, displacement of interfering lung tissue, and wider field available for study with a minimum of reverberation artifact. The ability to obtain echocardiograms from the chronic experimental dog under physiologic conditions might provide new and improved applications of echocardiography for the evaluation of human cardiac disorder

AbstractExperience with the use of ultrasound for investigating hydatid disease of the abdomen is reported. The presence of daughter cysts within the parent cyst gives a pathognomonic sonographic picture, whether the cyst is single or multiple. The presence of single cysts without daughter cysts is still a diagnostic problem, unless calcification is seen. Associated secondary infection changes the picture to one of a nonspecific abscess, and only the presence of additional cysts can give a clue about the etiology.

AbstractEchocardiographic left atrial dimension has been reported to correlate with left‐to‐right shunt (Qp/Qs) in children with isolated ventricular septal defect (VSD) or patent ductus arteriosus (PDA). In 17 children with isolated VSD, we prospectively compared Qp/Qs with the ratio of echocardiographic left atrial dimension to aortic root diameter (LAD/Ao) and with the left atrial dimension corrected for body surface area (LAD/M2). The correlation between LAD/Ao and Qp/Qs was not statistically significant (r= 0.49,p>0.05). The LAD/M2correlated significantly with Qp/Qs (r= 0.66,p<0.01); however, prediction intervals were excessively wide. Our findings indicate that it is inappropriate to predict Qp/Qs in these patients from echocardiographic
