AbstractDetailed images of upper abdominal vascular anatomy can now be obtained by experienced operators using modern real‐time ultrasound scanners. To help determine the role of real‐time ultrasound in preoperative evaluation of pancreatic carcinoma, ultrasound and angiographic results were compared in a series of 45 patients admitted with documented carcinoma of the pancreas. When surgical results were available, these were compared with the ultrasound and angiographic findings. The main tributaries of the portal system were evaluated with ultrasound and angiography for evidence of compression, displacement, or occlusion. A sensitivity of 90%and specificity of 95% were achieved for splenic vein abnormalities by ultrasound compared to angiography. For portal vein evaluation, sensitivity was 75%, and specificity was 100%, whereas for the superior mesenteric vein a sensitivity of 100% and a specificity of 94% were attained. AbstractMechanical sector scanning using a balloon and electronic scanning using transrectal probes were applied in the diagnosis of pediatric superficial masses. In 135 cases of pediatric superficial masses definitely diagnosed by surgical findings and histopathologic examinations, a comparative investigation was performed between the surgical and histopathologic findings and ultrasonographic findings. Among these 135 cases, 117 of the masses were benign, and 18 were malignant. By means of these scans, it was possible to diagnose correctly not only the size and shape of the mass but also the internal characteristics. However, it was difficult to determine if the mass was benign or malignant.

AbstractLeft ventricular inflow was studied with pulsed Doppler echocardiography in 12 normals and 12 patients with a dilated left ventricle as a result of ischemic heart disease. To study the influence of left ventricular relaxation on both the transmitral and apical diastolic flow patterns, we applied range ambiguity. This provides simultaneous display of Doppler shifts obtained at different depths. The diastolic Doppler shift curves at the mitral valve and apical level in normals had the same time of onset, whereas there was an apparent time delay in the patients with heart disease (range 160–360 ms). AbstractContinuous‐wave (CW) Doppler ultrasonography is a well‐known technique in the assessment of peripheral and central circulation. The purpose of this study was to find out whether the technique can be used to demonstrate portal hypertension (PH) from liver disease through the evaluation of flow reversal in the veins of the round ligament. One hundred eight patients (50 controls and 58 with PH) underwent abdominal sonography, endoscopic examination, and CW Doppler flowmetry of the umbilical region. In 53 of 58 patients with PH, hepatofugal venous flow was found in the round ligament; this sign was absent in all of the controls. There was remarkable agreement between the results of CW Doppler examination and those of endoscopy and abdominal sonography: its sensitivity was about 91%, and we encountered no false positives.
