摘要:
The field of consumer education needs conceptual frameworks to organize the growing body of existing knowledge and to point to needed research. The use of the familiar life cycle variable for this purpose is proposed. Generalizations, based upon a review of the literature, are offered about the characteristics, typical product and service purchases, marketplace concepts and knowledge, marketplace skills, typical marketplace problems and level of resources of different life cycle stage categories.

Legislation in 1976 abolishing fair trade appears to have led to limited price cutting among retailers. In particular, stores identified by their managers as being “discount” outlets were found to have undercut the prices of other stores in most product groups while the pricing policies of chain stores and multi‐line stores have not become more aggressive on fair trade items since repeal. Limited evidence indicates that a reduction in nonprice competition in the form of newspaper advertising and sales personnel has also attended repeal. Finally, a substantial increase in the frequency of business failures in fair trade states during 1976 indicates that a consolidation among retailers may have coincided with the abolishment of uniform, manufacturer‐specified retail

摘要:
The Federal Trade Commission has voted unanimously to accept judgments that require discontinuance of the preparation, publication, circulation and use of relative value scales due to their potential in price fixing. Thus far these judgments have been limited to the health care industry, but this approach to price fixing has significance for many areas of business, especially the auto repair industry. This study explores the extent to which relative value scales (flat rate manuals) are used in estimating prices for auto repairs, and investigates whether or not price fixing exists for quoted prices, repair times, labor rates, or the ratio between the quoted price for one repair procedure and another.

Food cooperatives have become more popular among consumers during the past decade. Although consumers can organize cooperatives for several reasons, economic factors may be more important than indicated by previous research. Specifically, the recent growth in consumer food cooperatives may be associated with declining competition in local food markets. This article reports recent research results on market structure and performance by SMSA that address this hypothesis.

This study investigated use of selected consumer skills by children of two ages. A simulated market was developed and used to determine each participating child's level of consumer competence. A telephone survey was conducted which examined recent purchase experiences for 282 older consumers residing in a midwestern academic community. The types of purchases studied were eyeglasses, funeral services, hearing aids, home appliance repair services, home repair services, and nursing home care. Generally high satisfaction levels were reported for these purchases. A tendency on the part of the respondents to draw upon past knowledge and experience in making their purchase decisions was found. A procedural caution is noted in the interpretation of social survey data on local consumer services.

An evaluation of a community‐wide discount program for elderly people in Richmond, Virginia is reported. The costs and benefits to both the elderly card holders and participating merchants were examined. While some elderly shoppers reported significant savings, many realized little benefit from the program. State occupational licensing laws have restricted advertising of prices for certain goods and services. Litigation is removing these restraints. Price surveys, including one for prescription eyeglasses that is presented in this paper, provide a benchmark for comparisons of price variation under conditions with and without advertising restraints.
