This paper analyzes the intrahousehold allocation of human resources to grocery shopping in a traditional male‐female household. A constrained utility maximization model is developed from which testable hypotheses relating to the choice of a household's grocery shopper are derived. The determinants which influence the choice of a shopper (either male, female, or both) are examined via a qualitative choice model. Results indicate that the choice of a shopper is explicable on economic grounds. Relative costs of shopping in terms of the foregone value of time and the efficiency of a shopper in searching for a lower price were found to be important determinants in the shopper selection proces

This study examines the losses to society from federal legislation in 1976 on state motorcycle helmet laws. Two major responses were (1) repeal of helmet laws or failure to enact laws and (2) modification of helmet laws. Losses ranged from $75 million to $244 million for states without helmet laws and from $71 million to $229 million for states with modified helmet laws. Comprehensive state helmet laws would have been cost effective with cost‐benefit ratios ranging from 0.05 to 0.18. In‐kind food assistance was the mainstay of federal food programs until the food stamp program expanded. Analysis of aggregate data suggests that large donations of cheese and butter since 1982, through the Temporary Emergency Food Assistance Program, replaced recipients’ normal purchases of the donated products, reduced consumption of close substitutes, and increased consumption of certain other protein foods. Extensive analysis of consumers’ responses to electricity information and feedback programs has yielded a consensus that such programs have little or no effect on consumers’ electricity use. We argue that these results may be misleading because offsetting usage effects are likely to occur both within and among households. 摘要:
A model of risk reduction is used to analyze personal bankruptcy rates. The model shows how state and federal laws can affect the quantity of resources that lenders devote to reducing the risk of making bad loans. Unanticipated events cause changes in bankruptcy rates because they alter the costs and benefits of bankruptcy to both creditors and debtors. Results of other studies are shown to be consistent with this model. Data for 1980 are then used to test the model. Asset exemption laws have a significant impact on bankruptcy rates that is consistent with the model. Unanticipated economic events are also found to have significant effects on bankruptcy rates.

Data from a national mail panel are used to develop psychographic and demographic profiles of heavier, lighter, and nonpurchasers of state lottery tickets.
