Children are consumers and subject to a number of factors which socialize them into this role. Consumer education is often cited as an important tool in directing this socialization process toward the desired result of developing efficient and knowledgeable consumers. But how early can consumer education begin in theschoolsetting? Can the preschool child be taught basic marketplace concepts and sequences or is this consumer simply too young? What are the early building blocks of consumer education? Do some approaches to teaching the very young consumer work better than others? This study presents a conceptual framework and the results of an exploratory laboratory study which begin to answer these important questions.

Hedonic price analysis was used to estimate the implicit market prices of the physical attributes and warranty provisions of refrigerators. Estimates were made of the implicit market prices of 2 warranty provisions, 6 physical characteristics and 13 brands using 1975 data on 156 models. The estimates were made of the implicit market prices of an additional 4 years and 9 years warranty coverage beyond the typical 1 year coverage. The results suggest that the implicit price of such additional warranty coverage exceeds (a) the cost of a service contract for a similar period, and (b) estimates of the present value of the expected cost of repairs.

The problem of consumers in evaluating energy saving investments suggests the need for a uniform disclosure method. Disclosure for energy conservation is related to the use of disclosure policies in Truth‐in‐Lending and other areas. Five methods of evaluating energy saving investments are analyzed: the apparent payback method, the present value method, the actual payback method, the loan payment method, and the rate of return method. The rate of return method is the only method that is both easy to understand and valid. The probable limitations in consumer understanding and use of information related to energy conservation, however, make it likely that a combination policy of disclosure, education, and product standards would be the most effective alternative for reaching energy conservation go

Consumer complaints can be used as pre‐purchase information. A major way in which this currently works is through Better Business Bureau reports to consumers on particular business firms. Case studies for the Consumer Complaint Study and two tests carried out in 1976 reconfirm the 1971 Rosenthal study conclusion that such BBB reports are “misleading, inaccurate, and incomplete.” The basic explanation of this poor quality of BBB reports continues to be the operation of BBBs in the interests of the conventional business

The effects of consumer information and consumer sophistication on the ability of consumers to make purchases offering the greatest benefits were examined. It was found that consumer information enhances the likelihood that consumers will make efficient choices of products. Consumer sophistication was also found to be an intervening variable in consumers' use of information.

This study focuses on a specific product, women's clothing, to gain further insights regarding consumer satisfaction and dissatisfaction. A variety of consumer characteristics including demographics, activities, interests and opinions (AIO's), product knowledge and product experience were used to successfully predict and profile consumer satisfaction. General suggestions for industry, governmental agencies and educators are presented regarding the implications of the findings for the general study of consumer satisfaction.
