Lymphocytes were recovered from large volumes of bovine blood by use of the continuous flow gyrotester. A flow rate of 1 liter/min and an operating speed of 2,500 rpm (450 × g) resulted in high yields of viable lymphocytes. The addition of a concentrated sodium chloride solution to re-establish isotonicity after a 10-second distilled water contact with the blood, increased the yield of viable lymphocytes from all samples tested. A possible lymphocyte fragility difference was noted when the viability of lymphocytes recovered from the blood of normal and leukemic cattle was compared after the hypotonic-gyrotester treatment

A new instructive type hypothesis has been formulated to account for the flow of information from an antigenic determinant to the corresponding recognition site in an antibody. It is postulated that antigen in the macrophage is broken down into determinant fragments containing about 5 aminoacyl residues. These residues attract a complementary sequence of aminoacyl groups attached to their respective s-RNA molecules, whose anticodons serve as a template for the formation of a short strand of antigenically informed RNA or cRNA. This cRNA, or its double stranded form c2 RNA is hybridized with genomic DNA from which a cDNA results. This c2DNA is integrated as a contiguous codon sequence into the lymphocyte gene coded for the l-chain of IgG. Synthesis of this chain and assembly of the antibody then proceeds in conventional ways and means. Hybridization of cRNA-DNA is probably the mechanism of immunologic selrecognition. This concept leads to the corolary of a symmetrical arrangement of the genetic code, including its degeneracy and redundancy. The arrangement suggests that antigen-antibody recognition is mediated by a complementary relationship between the following pairs of aminoacids: Phe-Lys, Leu-AspN, Leu-Glu, Lau-Asp, Ilu-Tyr, Meth-Tyr, Val-Glu, Val-His, Ser-Arg, Ser-Ser, Pro-Gly, Thr-Tyr, Thr-Cys and Ala-Arg.

Comparison of survival data of 133 patients, treated during the years 1956 to 1964, with a previous series of 135 patients diagnosed during 1933–1955 gave the following results: the 1956–1964 series showed a lower mortality during the first 6–12 months, but the 5-year survival in all stages was lower in the more recently treated series. 61.6% survived 12 months in the 1956–1964 period, as against 53.4% in the 1933–1955 patient group. The corresponding 5-year survival figures were 8.3% (1956–1964) and 21.5% (1933–1955), respectively. Good palliation was achieved by the more intensive radiotherapy and chemotherapy of the more recently treated patients, but the more intensive treatment may lower the host resistance and contribute to the lower survival. Stage of the disease at diagnosis is the most important factor influencing prognosis, but difficulty of staging was emphasized. No correlation between delay and stage of the disease or survival has been found. Histological pattern has probably some bearing on prognosis; solid tumours having a higher malignancy. Total serum complement levels were measured in a group of 31 patients with various malignancies before, during, and after radiotherapy. Levels were slightly higher than normal on average, but there was no significant change in mean level over the 9-week period of observation. This suggests that antigen-antibody reactions which fix complement are not involved in the radiation response.

Preliminary data on the relationship of mitosis to cell differentiation was obtained for tissues involved in the regeneration of the right forelimb of Triturus viridescens following pulse Cell cycle studies injections of tritiated thymidine. for connective tissue cells and blastema cells from 18 day limb regenerates revealed an S-phase duration of 30–55 hours and a cycle time of 45–60 hours for these two tissues. Grillo and Urso (1968) reported an S-phase duration of 55 hours and a cycle time of 75 hours for newt intestinal epithelium. 241 consecutive Negro patients (66 male and 175 female) admitted to one institution in 1969 with a histologically confirmed diagnosis of cancer were studied for erythrocytic G-6-PD deficiency by the brilliant cresyl blue decolorization technique. Hemoglobin and haptoglobin types were also studied. The frequencies of these characteristics were compared with the values for control Negroes. The patients and controls were shown to be comparable and internally consistent. A lower frequency of G-6-PD deficiency was observed in both male and female cancer patients compared with male or female controls. Possible explanations of this negative association between cancer and G-6-PD deficiency are offered and the clear need for further studies is emphasized.

The object of this experiment was to determine the anatomical distribution of a supernumerary limb-inducing factor in the tissues of adult Rana pipiens. One mm3 pieces of frog tissues (esophagus, stomach, duodenum, colon, ovary, oviduct, lung, spleen, fat body, cardiac muscle, brain, skeletal muscle, peripheral nerve, skin and tarsal phalanges) were implanted subcutaneously in 252 upper arms of newts (Triturus viridescens). Results of these and previous experiments show that tissue from the lung and the urinary tract possess the greatest ability to induce supernumerary limbs. This ability is moderately present in tissues of the digestive tract, the female genital tract and in skeletal tissues. It is absent in brain, skeletal and cardiac muscle, skin, peripheral nerves and liver.

We report the presence of an hereditary hemolytic anemia in the X strain of rabbits. This condition is rapidly fatal to both sexes with a mean survival time of 4.75 months. In rare protracted cases it is associated with thymic hyperplasia and thymoma. Because autosomal recessive inheritance is indicated we have assigned the symbol ha to the gene responsible for development of the hemolytic anemia. The possibility exists that it is identical with the gene (Is) conferring susceptibility to lymphosarcoma in strain WH rabbits, since all affected animals in both strains have the same common ancestry in strain X. A common gene responsible for all conditions may have phenotypic expressions which are dependent on the host genotype. Breeding experiments are in progress to test this hypothesis.
