In a registry of 24,105 cancers, 15 patients were found to have three primary cancers in different organs. Decreasing time intervals between sequential diagnoses and then death were noted. Occurrence and sequence of cancer sites appeared to be random. Stage of second and third cancers tended, on the average, to be more advanced than those of the first cancers. This study strengthened the hypothesis that patients with primary cancers in different organs are victims of compromised host defenses against cancer.

Two mice of the TM strain, maintained on Purina chow supplemented with refined corn oil plus free fatty acids, in one case, and with refined corn oil without free fatty acids, in the other case, developed primary heart rhabdomyosarcomas. The tumors metastasized to the lungs and the kidney, in the first case, and to the lungs alone in the second case. One mouse of the TM strain, on the diet supplemented with corn oil plus free fatty acids, developed a fibrosarcoma behind the right anterior extremity. Metastases from the tumor were found in the liver, lungs and myocardium. Another mouse of the C57 Bl. strain, injected subcutaneously, in the interscapular region, at the age of 7 days, with a single dose of 30 μg of Delestrogen, developed, at the point of injection, a large rhabdomyosarcoma. At the age of 533 days, when the animal was killed, metastases from the tumor were found in the intercostal muscles and in the heart. The injection of Ehrlich tumor cells into normal and immunosuppressed rats induced a transitory ascitic tumor. In an initial stage only Ehrlich metaphases were observed. The incidence of rat metaphases, which appeared later on, increased gradually reaching 100 % in a stage when neither the viability nor the tumorigenicity of the Ehrlich cells were significantly modified. 18 patients with metastatic or recurrent bronchogenic carcinoma and one patient with a squamous cell carcinoma of the trachea were treated with a combination of CCNU, hexamethylmelamine and methotrexate. Objective remissions were observed in 3/19 (16 %): 1 complete, 1 partial ( > 50%) and 1 incomplete ( < 50 %). However, the patient with the complete response was the only drug death, on day 21. Remission duration in the other two patients was 3 and 9+ months respectively. One patient with oat cell carcinoma experienced no tumor progression for 5 months. This combination resulted in severe gastrointestinal toxicity in 5/19, severe thrombopenia in 12/19 and severe neutropenia in 6/19. We conclude that the combination as used here resulted in no increased clinical effectiveness and proved to be quite toxic.

The disease, provoked by injections of water and other harmless liquids or wounds without tissue loss, is characterized by the regression of certain organs, openings in the epidermis, pigmentary anomalies and malignant tumors. The very few worms which recover spontaneously, regenerate the eliminated parts or develop supernumerary structures. Wounds are producing the disease less frequently when planarians are undernourished. The disease can also manifest itself spontaneously, especially in the summer. Diseased worms become unable to regenerate. During a transitory period epimorphosis is still possible but is not followed by morphallaxis. The symptoms of the disease manifest themselves in the regenerated parts. A fragment cut out from a worm that just became diseased regenerates and recovers completely. The results give additional evidence to the earlier conclusions about the ‘type I cell’ system of planarians.
