Reviewing the scans of 114 post operative thyroid patients shows that 59 of them (49.1%) had some functioning thyroid tissue in the operated area. As the postoperative scanning periods varied from 1 month to 44 years we could not decide between regeneration or remnants in some of the patients. Some showed remnants a short period after total thyroidectomy, others had complete regeneration several months or years after operation. The postoperative finding occurred in both malignant and benign lesions, namely 17 of 40 patients with carcinoma and 39 of 74 with non-malignant disease.

In a study using a newly-reported staining technique, malignant cells demonstrated a reaction different from normal cells. The study consisted in the examination of the blood smears of 43 patients with the clinical diagnoses of Hodgkin’s disease, leukemia, lymphoma, lymphosarcoma and some of questionable diagnosis. The cellular reaction was compared to subjects considered normal. In the patients with a diagnosis of a malignancy of the blood, the involved blood cells demonstrated cytoplasmic particles after staining. Included in this reaction were active polymorphonuclear leukocytes. All normal subjects had polymorphs clear of deposition. The cellular reaction was similar to that found in viremias, but unlike the case of viremias the sequence of events in the plasma was completely absent in these malignancies. In the plasma of the reported cases of malignancies of the blood, stable clusters of particles were found. The significance of the cellular similarities and plasma differences between malignancies and viremias are being investigated. The appearance of plasma deposition, different from the viremic plasma phenomenon, may be of diagnostic significance. Mature and immature C-type particles were observed in the extracellular spaces and in vesicles as well as budding from tumor cells and cell cultures derived from a transplanted X-irradiation induced rat mammary tumor. The C-type particles were found at a frequency of 1.13 per cell section examined. The buoyant density of the C-type particles ranged from 1.088 to 1.127 g/cm3 in sucrose density gradient. Deposits of glycogen were frequently observed in the cytoplasm of the tumor cells in culture. A smaller particle, having a diameter of approximately 50 mm was also observed in these cell cultures. This latter particle was restricted to intracytoplasmic locations and was observed singularly as well as in groups. It was spherical in shape having an electron lucent center. The outer membrane of the particle was poorly defined simulating a ‘toothed wheel’. These smaller particles were observed in high concentration at 1.204 g/cm3 in a sucrose density gradient. Thirteen histologically verified cases of synovial sarcoma are described. Eight of them were followed for over five years. The commonest site of the tumour was in the lower limbs. A routine of using several different anti-cancer agents together has been established as being an effective and practical way of treating advanced cancer. Sequentially radiation therapy can be given to maintain or increase the initial help of chemotherapy. The anti-cancer drugs may in some cases be continued with and/or after completion of radiation to maintain the benefits. Partial or total surgical excision of cancer treated first or afterward by chemotherapy and radiation has added to disease control. Fifty-nine advanced cancers have been treated in this fashion by the authors, giving objective and subjective benefits of over six months duration, many for much longer than six months.

The problem of the origin in vitro of a particular type of cell population (monolayers of epitheliocytes) from mouse kidney was investigated by applying neotetra-zolium and trypan blue as extrinsic tags to the donor animals. No signs of the extrinsic tags were found in the monolayers in any of the experiments, though other tubular elements of the explants did reveal formazan or trypan blue inclusions when the donor animals were treated with neotetrazolium or trypan blue respectively. In the intact kidney of the treated animals the tags were found in the cells of the proximal tubules. It therefore can be safely concluded that the epithelial monolayers of the explants do not originate from cells of the proximal tubules. However, their origin from other epithelial elements of the kidney (collecting tubules?) cannot be excluded.

Tissue culture of six human giant cell tumors of bone was undertaken (one on two occasions). All of them were cultivated successfully. Five cultures have shown outgrowth in about 25 days. In the remaining two cases continuous culture (nine generations) was successfully carried out. From this study the following results were obtained: the giant cells usually persist for about 48 to 72 h in primary tissue cultures. New giant cells were born during the following days in vitro. In trypsinized material the two cultures obtained lost their primitive growth features after the second generation. However, the ability to form giant cells is not definitely lost as is demonstrated by organ culture technique. The multinucleated giant cells exhibit, in primary tissue cultures, the same cytological and cytochemical features as normal osteoclasts and giant cell tumors. The mechanism of giant cell formation seems to be direct amitotic division, fusion of two or more mononuclear cells, or a combination of both. Furthermore, it was possible to detect a resting nucleus and another nucleus in mitotic division, side-by-side in the same cell, an unusual phenomenon in cell biology.
