The antibody response to sheep erythrocytes was examined in normal mice and in mice with ascites tumor. Antigen stimulation from day 0 to day 7 after tumor transplantation was associated with a decreased immune response. From day 7 onward, no immune response occurred. PHA injection before antigen administration depressed the immune response, whereas PHA injection after antigen administration enhanced the immune response. Intraperitoneal administration of PHA caused a greater decrease in tumor volume. Further studies on the effect of PHA alone and in conjunction with other methods of therapy are being carried out at present.

An association between vasopressin and corticosteroids is proposed as a new palliative treatment of breast cancer. A first group of 88 patients with locoregional involvement or bone metastases gave 46 cases of remission (52.8%) with a mean time course of 17.4 months; a second group of 39 similar patients showed 23 cases of remission (58.9%). Worthy of note is the fact that the objective remissions in cases of locoregional involvement were respectively of 48.5% (mean time course of 18.5 months) and 52.1%. Meaning of the obtained results are discussed by comparison with corticotherapy alone data. The physiopathological bases of therapy are exposed which account for rather complicated directions for administration of the treatment.

A systemic treatment regime is presented for the management of disseminated carcinoma of the breast based on the dominant site of metastasis. Additional factors, such as menopausal status and length of free interval are considered in management. Treatment is suggested depending on whether the dominant site of the metastasis is defined as favorable or unfavorable. Admittedly brain metastasis and inflammatory breast carcinoma are special unfavorable sites requiring special management. It is hoped that attention to the dominant site of metastasis will provide a more rational basis for management of disseminated carcinoma of the breast.

Coagulation factors were assayed in 12 children with acute lymphoblastic leukemia and in 6 children with disseminated solid tumors. The large majority of these children showed evidence of ‘hypercoagulable state’, as manifested by shortened partial thromboplastin time and presence supernormal levels of fibrinogen and of factors VIII, IX, and XI. In children in whom factor VIII assays were done both at time of initial diagnosis and later when in complete remission, all cases showed a decrease in the factor VIII level, falling into the normal range. One child with persistent increase of factor VIII level showed early CNS relapse. Separate antisera were raised against blastula, gastrula, and neurula stage frog embryos. After absorption with adult liver, kidney, brain, intestine and oviduct, antisera generally showed precipitin lines against homologous antigens and adult skin but not against other adult organs. Antisera absorbed with adult liver and kidney were positive to homologous antigens, adult oviduct and skin, but not other adult organs. Further absorption of one of the latter antisera with skin, left several homologous precipitin lines. Regenerating intestine always tested negative to antisera absorbed as described even when homologous and adult skin reactivity was present. Antisera absorption with gravid ovaries removed homologous reactivity. This work indicates that frog embryos and ovarian eggs possess antigens in common, some of which are not found in adult tissues and at least one, which is the same or similar to a component of adult skin. It further shows that regenerating intestine lacks these antigens or has them in significantly smaller amounts.

Normal kidney tissues of the frog, Rana pipiens, were cultivated with pieces of frog renal tumor or exposed to tumor nitrates and maintained in a new ‘vertical’ type of organ culture. After several weeks, experimental cultures showed proliferative changes that fulfilled ordinary clinical histopathological criteria for malignant transformation. The temperature-associated, summer-winter cycle of herpes-type viral nuclear inclusion bodies observed in the Lucké tumor in nature [Rafferty, 1964] was duplicated in vitro. DNA from seven experimentally induced morphological mutants and the wild type strain 74A of Neurospora crassa showed typical bimodal denaturation profiles in a Gilford 2400 spectrophotometer. The ‘slime’ and ‘ropy’ mutants showed comparatively high proportion of A + T rich DNA sequences. The DNA sequences of the slime mutant were distinctly different from those of parental DNA as well as other wild type DNAs.
