Earlier studies indicate thatPicea abiesandPicea obovataare clearly distinguished by only one morphological character, i.e. the form of the cone scale. In this study populations of the two taxa were investigated chemometrically. The needles were subjected directly to methanolysis, and the released components, dominated by fatty acid methyl esters, were gas chromatographed. Principal components analysis of the analytical data indicate a clear distinction betweenP. abiesandP. obovata.

During the revision of the genusBauhiniafor Flora Malesiana three undescribed species have been discovered,Bauhinia kostermansiisp. nov. andB. steenisiisp. nov. from Borneo, andB. franckiisp. nov. from the Malay Peninsula.Bauhinia chrysophyllahas turned out to be a later homonym, for which reasonBauhinia aureifolianom. nov. is proposed. The chromosome number of this species has been counted as 2n = 26.B. fabriliscomb, et stat. nov. is proposed forPhanera riedeliivar.fabrilis.

A fossil sporangium and spores ofOsmunda regaliswere found in sediments bio‐stratigraphically dated to about 9500 years old on the island of Utsira, SW Norway. The ages of the Utsira remains and finds of spores from Jæren indicate thatOsmundaimmigrated into Norway, perhaps from Britain, during the first 1000 years of the Holocene. The forest on the strictly protected island Vorsø in Horsens Fjord has since 1952 been examined every ten years to discover the number, basal area, wood volume and aboveground biomass of the species. This paper describes the results from 1982 and the development up to that. The dominating species areFraxinus excelsior, Ulmus glabraandFagus sylvatica.The two forests, “Vesterskov” (6.09 ha) and “Østerskov” (2.48 ha) respectively, were, in 1982, still immature. Their number of stems per ha were: 756 and 509; basal area: 38 m2and 45 m2. volume: 544 m3and 615 m3; biomass 207 t and 268 t. The annual increase 1972–1982 was respectively 8.8 m3/ha and 0.3 m3/ha. The impact of the cormorant (Phalacrocorax carbo sinensis) is especially in “Østerskov” increasing, since the colony here was established in 1976. This paper presents results of a study on the synecology ofAthyrium distentifolium.The investigation is based on phytosociological and ecological analyses of stands dominated byA. distentifoliumwithin its whole distributional area in Western Norway. The distribution and floristic composition of the stands are related to different environmental parameters such as climate, soil and topography. The data are analysed by numerical methods, of which two‐way indicator species analysis (TWINSPAN), canonical correspondence analysis (CCA), and simple discriminant functions (DISCRIM) are the most useful. Based on a TWINSPAN classification of the 211 investigated stands, 9 different groups (types) are distinguished. These belong mainly to three phytosociological alliances: Cryptogrammo‐Athyrion alpestris (1 group), Lactucion alpinae (5 groups) and Vaccinio‐Piceion (3 groups). The quadrats are in most cases very poor in species, even in edaphically rich areas. Soil richness in the stands is very variable.A. distentifoliummay be dominant in edaphically rich areas and it is not a calciphobe species in W. Norway. Most stands show no signs of human influence. The Ascomycete flora onMyrica galehas been investigated, mainly on the basis of Swedish material. It is found to be largely host specific. Four Discomycetes and nine Pyrenomycetes s. lat. are recorded as true, ± exclusiveMyricafungi; ten plurivorous Pyrenomycetes have occasionally been met with. The mycoflora onMyrica galeseems to be of a rather recent origin, composed of fairly modern species. In the study area 150 diatom taxa were identified, including several varieties. The characteristic feature of the community is the strong predominance of several epipsammic diatom species of whichAchnanthes delicatula, Fragilaria construensvar.venter, Navicula cryptolyra, andOpephora olseniiare the most abundant. The predominating taxa are autochthonous in the study area and their percent content ranges from 70 to 90%. In the sediments studied there was also a large group of species which are typical of the Puck Bay interior. They are usually represented by several specimens showing various degrees of destruction. Only few of them attain in the study area considerable percent contents e.g.Achnanthes lemmermanni, Amphora acutiuscula, Cocconeis scutellum, Diploneis interrupta, Navicula rhynchocephala, N. perminuta, Nitzschia frustulumandN. nana.Numerous taxa reported in the paper are recorded in the study area for the first time.
