摘要:
The magnetic order and critical behavior of well‐defined (100)p(1×1) surfaces of ultrathin (1–7 monolayers) vanadium films deposited on atomically clean and flat Ag(100) substrates is studied by electron capture spectroscopy, a novel method which probes electron spin polarization (ESP) at the topmost surface. For all investigated films, the long‐ranged ESP is nonzero, demonstrating the existence of long‐ranged ferromagnetic order at the film surface. For a 5‐monolayer‐thick film, ferromagnetic order sets in at a critical surface temperatureTCs=475.1 K. In the temperature range from 200 to 475.1 K, the ESP of the topmost surface layer follows the power law (TCs−T)β, with β=0.128±0.01. This result is in good agreement with the exact value β= (1)/(8) of the two‐dimensional Ising model.

摘要:
The two‐dimensional electronic structure of 1 ML Cr/Au(001) along Γ̄–Σ̄–M̄ was investigated with angle‐resolved photoemission. Emission from adx2−y2(Γ̄3)‐derived band is observed near 4.5‐eV binding energy. At Γ̄, adxz, yzor Γ̄5state is detected at 0.8 eV which splits along Γ̄–Σ̄–M̄ into its odd (Σ̄2) and even (Σ̄1) components. The odddxz, yz‐derived component disperses from 0.8 to 1.2 eV. In addition, emission from a seconddx2−y2‐derived band is observed at 0.5 eV. Cr induces a loss of photoemission intensity in the Audband that is attributed to Cr–Aud–dhybridization.

摘要:
The creation of a surface leads to the rearrangement of the positions of the atoms composing the outerlayers of the crystal on a magnitude of hundredths of angstroms to angstroms. Medium‐energy ion scattering combined with channeling and blocking (MEIS–CB) has become one of the most accurate methods to measure the three‐dimensional (3D) structure of these relaxed and often reconstructed surfaces. The Ni(110) and NiAl(110) surfaces are used to demonstrate the effectiveness and accuracy of MEIS–CB as a method of 3D structural characterization of metal and alloy surfaces. Other recent MEIS–CB studies of metal relaxation are reviewed.
