Evidence is presented that a polygalacturonic acid derivative (Stypturon) when administered intravenously to rats in an optimal dosage results in concomitant diminution of blood loss from experimental injury to the tail. Mortality rate associated with hemorrhagic shock was significantly reduced. Blood coagulation was inhibited at the site of injury by immersion of the traumatized tail in an anticoagulant solution at 37 C. for the duration of the experiment. The data for the enhancement of the normal hemostyptic mechanism by a polymeric substance without the apparent mediation of the blood coagulation system is discussed.

The critical closing pressure (CCP) of vessels supplying the capillary loops of the nailfold was estimated as the digital systolic pressure minus the air pressure required on the finger to just prevent flow of blood in the capillary loops. The digital blood pressure was estimated by an auscultatory method and the presence or absence of flow in the loops was detected by direct microscopic examination. It was shown that the method is valid and does not simply measure a local intravascular pressure or some rheological factor. The CCP was lower after body heating than after body cooling and was markedly reduced by anesthetization of the digital nerves. In hypertensive patients the CCP was higher than in normal subjects.

Renal hemodynamics, electrolyte excretion and plasma level of glucorticoids were studied in pregnant sheep before and after the experimental induction of toxemia. Marked renal ischemia occurred in the animals which developed toxemia. This abnormality occurred concomitantly with an increase in plasma corticoids. Despite the renal ischemia, arterial pressure remained the same. There are some similarities between the toxemia of the sheep and that of human pregnancy.

Nicotinic acid when fed to rats as 0.8 per cent of their diet caused an 83 per cent increase in radioactivity of liver cholesterol-digitonin precipitate. In vitro studies using rat liver slices indicated that nicotinic acid increased the incorporation of radiocarbon into cholesterol by 46 per cent.

Two determinations of cardiac output using the Fick principle were performed within a 15 min. time period in a series of 167 patients representing a wide spectrum of cardiac and pulmonary disorders. The reproducibility of the 2 readings was found to be satisfactory, attesting to the reliability of the practical application of the Fick principle as employed in clinical medicine.

The contour of the flow pulse along the normal unopened aorta of human subjects and dogs was established by recording with the surgical probe type, square-wave magnetic flowmeter. The contour at a given vessel segment was found to be the result of the transforming action of the arterial system on the ventricular ejection pulse. The characteristics of the aorta and its branches were found to be analagous to a low-pass electric tuned circuit, which resonates at 3 to 6 c.p.s. The resonant frequency, apparent from midsystole throughout diastole, was independent of heart rate, damped to extinction during diastole and renewed with each systole. New terms for elastic hydraulics are proposed and defined.

This study tests the possibility that pressoreceptors of the sinoaortic type may be located in thoracic vessels and innervated by thoracic afferent nerves. Heart rate and arterial pressure were recorded in anesthetized dogs with neural pathways intact, bilateral vagotomy and sinoaortic denervation before and after internal occlusion of the aorta just above the celiac artery. Results obtained indicate that after elimination of the sinoaortic mechanisms by vagotomy and isolation of the carotid sinuses no functional pressoreceptors of the sinoaortic type can be demonstrated in the arterial tree above the celiac artery.

The effect of unilobar engorgement and edema in a dog's lung on the effort of breathing was studied by expressing the latter as the velocity of air-flow attained per unit of pressure change across the lung, and as static compliance. Edema of the left lower lobe, produced by shunting blood from the femoral into the pulmonary artery, affected the effort of breathing only at high infusion rates and volumes, otherwise changes in resting (mid) position and respiratory rate kept the effort of breathing constant. Static compliance decreased with infusion, possibly because the infused blood encroached on the air space.
