Rats subjected to diverse hypertension-inducing procedures develop an abnormal sodium tolerance characterized by an accelerated rate of excretion of an administered load. Pitressin reverses this abnormality in sodium tolerance during the period corresponding to the delayed depressor phase of the response to the extract.

Measurable myocardial infarcts of predictable size and location were produced in dogs by low ligation of the left descending coronary artery just proximal to the origin of the apical branch. Two groups of dogs with such infarcts were studied, one group being treated intramuscularly with two daily closes of 20 units of Acthar Gel for 9 to 11 days and the other group being untreated. At the end of the experimental period there was no demonstrable difference between the two groups with respect to the size, site or histologic appearance of the infarcts.

In dogs anesthetized with pentobarbital, ventricular arrhythmias induced by ouabain were consistently reverted to sinus rhythm by acute lowering of the serum calcium. In ouabain-in-toxicated dogs, the depressed and shortened S-T segment was elevated and lengthened by induced hypocalcemia. Potassium administered concomitantly with ouabain exerted a protective effect against ouabain intoxication. Lowering of the serum calcium in animals showing moderately advanced potassium effects in their ECG precipitated acute, fatal potassium poisoning. Ouabain was capable of reversing the tachycardia and pulsus alternans due to hypocalcemia in the face of persistent hypocalcemic tetany.

Cardiac output estimations done by the pulse pressure method were compared to those done simultaneously by the dye method in pregnancy, labor, and in the early puerperium. The subjects selected were young, healthy and without edema or clinical evidence of heart disease. A total of 30 determinations was carried out on 23 subjects. Agreement within 25 per cent of the dye method was attained in 90 per cent of the blood pressure method tests.

The effect of several antifoaming agents by inhalation in preventing paroxysmal pulmonary edema was tested in a series of rabbits. Three single agents (silicone aerosol, freon, and ethyl alcohol vapor) proved beneficial; their combination did not enhance the beneficial effect. A new agent (silicone aerosol) and a new combination (10 per cent ether in alcohol by aerosol) are now ready for clinical trial.

Derivatives of purified prothrombin and substances required for the formation of a derivative have been studied in connection with SPCA deficient plasma. The deficiency can be corrected in vitro with prothrombin derivatives. It is concluded that the SPCA patient cannot convert prothrombin to autoprothrombin and thrombin in the same way as a normal individual, and that the precursor of SPCA is prothrombin.

The conjugated lipids of connective tissue of the rat and rabbit obtained by the sponge-biopsy technic and the aorticintimaof the rabbit were divided into two portions by differential saline solubility and the saline-soluble portion was further fractionated into the alpha and beta fractions of Cohn. No apparent relationship was observed between the protein, amino acids or lipids of the serum and the connective tissue of the rabbit. The sponge-connective tissue differed from the aorticintimain certain respects but appeared to be similar in the saline-insoluble fractions of amino acid and cholesterol. The effects of sex and age upon connective tissue of the rat is described.

It is known that when actomyosin and adenosine triphosphate (ATP) interact, the ultraviolet absorption is no longer that characteristic either of actomyosin or of ATP. This report deals with a spectrophotometric study of interactions of various chemicals and/or drugs with actomyosin. The intention was to discover whether these agents alter the absorption, i.e., optical density (O.D.) of actomyosin solutions and if so, whether all the agents produce similar changes.

In a former study significant differences were found in the orientation and magnitude of spatial ECG vectors as determined using two different methods. The results presented in this series show that the difference in the leads used account for the major part of these discrepancies and thus emphasize the importance of a standardization of electrode position for spatial vectorcardiography.

Premature systoles were elicited at many points in the dog heart and the resultant pattern of excitation plotted in detail with a multipolar electrode and a 16-channel oscilloscope. In premature systoles, most of the mural endocardium is excited by a wave travelling at about 1 meter per second. These results indicate that in a normally originating beat the mural endocardium is excited by branched Purkinje tissue, the elements of which conduct at about 1 meter per second. The transmural velocity of the wave of depolarization in premature systoles is about 0.3 meter per second. No evidence was found for intramural penetration of Purkinje fibers. Intramural potentials recorded on stimulation give some insight into normal intramural potentials.
