Measurements were made of venous drainage from the right and left lower lobes of dogs' lungs. Blood supply was normal and breathing spontaneous. One lung was ventilated with air or oxygen and the other with nitrogen. Control and experimental flows were highly variable and though the anoxic lung received a smaller flow that was significantly different, the physiologic consequence of this fact is doubtful.

Adrenalectomized dogs maintained on desoxyeorticosterone acetate developed a fatal circulatory collapse when given normal dog plasma. They showed general restlessness, a rapid fall in blood pressure and cardiac index, a decline in central venous pressure and general prostration. Most dogs developed a bloody diarrhea and a minority showed edematous swelling of the face with itching. Animals with intact spleens exhibited marked hemoconcentration, splenectomized animals did not. Blood and plasma specific gravity determinations offered no evidence for gross plasma loss. Diphenhydramine prevented the collapse.

In anesthetized dog, acute mitral insufficiency of variable severity results in an increase in coronary blood flow and myocardial oxygen consumption. The increase in oxygen consumption is interpreted as meaning either that the left ventricle expends a significant amount of energy in regurgitating blood into the left atrium during mitral insufficiency, or that mitral insufficiency induces a decrease of the efficiency of the left ventricle or both.

Radioautography and conventional counter methods have been used to determine the relative amount and localization of I131albumin in a number of tissues at 3, 30, and 60 min. after intravenous injection. Certain tissues showed essentially no change in albumin content with time, others contained extravascular albumin which increased with time, and the liver and adrenal evidenced a decreasing level of albumin with time. The transcapillary passage of albumin and its accumulation in extravascular compartments are correlated with tissue structure.

This report deals with the influence of cortisone, prednisolone, prednisone and 9 α-fluorocortisol acetate on the serum antitryptic activity of normal, splenectomized, adrenalectomized and adrenalectomized-splenectomized rats. Elevation of serum antitryptic activity was most consistent with 9α-fluorocortisol acetate administration. Prednisolone and prednisone proved less effective while cortisone-induced changes were of small magnitude.

The independent influences of stroke volume, heart rate, aortic pressure, hypothermia, sympathomimetic amines, metered mitral and aortic valvular regurgitation, and alterations in myocardial contractility on the duration and mean rate of ventricular ejection and filling were studied. These observations were made in a metabolically supported, isolated heart preparation with performance characteristics comparable to the non-isolated heart.

Changes in weight, arterial and peripheral venous pressures, and venous outflow were measured during levarterenol infusion and sciatic nerve stimulation in an isolated hindlimb with constant arterial inflow. Our results indicate that the weight loss which occurs during these procedures is caused by peripheral venous constriction, and that the loss of volume from the hindlimb is almost entirely from the intravascular compartment.

A prolonged and frequently extreme pressor response subsequent to the usual pressor response to asphyxia, nicotine injection or carotid occlusion has been observed in dogs, cats and monkeys treated with certain pressor aminies. Analysis of this phenomenon indicates that it is due to sensitization of the vascular bed, largely that of the intestine, by the amines to a pituitary hormone released by the various stimuli used. This hormone is probably equivalent to vasopressin.

An increase of intracellular potassium and sodium content in the wall of the aorta occurs in experimental renal hypertension. The elevated potassium tends to revert toward normal when blood pressure is again lowered with reserpine. The efficacy of rigid restriction of dietary sodium intake in decreasing blood pressure proved quite limited. The development of renal hypertension in the face of rigid sodium restriction further demonstrates that dietary sodium plays no more than an enhancing role in the pathogenesis of renal “isehemic” hypertension.

A method for the production of experimental coronary thrombosis in dogs by the injection of thrombin into the anterior descending branch of the left coronary artery is presented. The clot-dissolving properties of trypsin in the form of Tryptar and Enzar were evaluated. The effect of trypsin was also studied in relation to changes in the clotting mechanism of the blood for the purpose of determining tolerated doses. Regardless of amounts of enzyme or time of administration, there was no evidence to indicate prevention of myocardial infarction.
