摘要:
Cardiovascular physiologists frequently infer directional changes in cardiac stroke volume and cardiac output from changes in aortic pulse pressure and atrial pressure. Errors are probably not infrequent. The Hamilton and Remington pressure pulse contour method can also indicate directional fluctuations in cardiac stroke volume. Comparison of the results of the two methods of analysis in situations where cardiac stroke index was changed acutely revealed good correspondence of indicated changes under conditions of simple alterations in venous return, but poor correspondence under more complex conditions such as after injections of pressor amines.

摘要:
The outflow of blood from the chest during the phases of the cardiac cycle is found to be nearly equaled by a phasic inflow. The net volume change exerts very small pressure changes in the intrathoracic (intrapulmonary) air. This is not due to the distensibility of the chest wall because when allowance is made for this factor and the intrathoracic blood volume change is calculated, it is found to be a very small fraction of the stroke volume.

The administration of oxygen, 60 to 70 per cent in inspired air, to dogs with ectopic ventricular tachycardia resulting from myocardial infarction produced no consistent changes in ectopic frequency, but the blood pressure was elevated during oxygen administration in every trial.

Deposition of lipids during development of atherosclerosis may come from extracellular fluid rather than directly from plasma. The lipoprotein composition of lymph thus assumes importance in the genesis of atherosclerosis. The predominant component found in thoracic duct lymph was the –S1.214 and 7, with lesser amounts of the 23. It was similar qualitatively but not quantitatively to dog's serum. The bulk of lymph lipoproteins derive from blood plasma. After fat feeding the absorbed lipid is delivered by the lymph to the blood in large aggregates containing large quantities of –S > 70 component. The > 70 component seemed to reflect changes in lipid transport in dogs more actively than the relatively more stable –S, 4, 7 and 23 components.

摘要:
Estrogens are highly effective both prophylactically and therapeutically against cholesterol-induced coronary atherogenesis in cockerels. The relative immunity of premenopausal women to coronary sclerosis may be related to the presence of these ovarian hormones. Therefore, estrogens may be useful in the treatment of human coronary atherosclerosis. With this object in mind, the elimination of the feminizing effects of estrogens would be highly desirable. The present experiments prove that concomitant exhibition of androgens and estrogens maintain masculine sex characteristics without interfering with the beneficent effect of estrogens on the coronary arteries in cockerels.
