Infusion of l-arterenol into anesthetized dogs increased the volume of blood in the heart and lungs, as indicated by an increase in “central blood volume,” estimated lung volume and pressure changes in the heart and lungs. An analysis of pressure and flow data in the systemic venous bed during infusion of the drug suggests that important sources of the shifted blood are the peripheral veins and venules.

Animals pretreated with appropriate doses of anticholinesterase agents develop auricular flutter and fibrillation following injection of acetylcholine or vagal stimulation. Depression of normal sinoauricular nodal function facilitates induction of fibrillation. During fibrillation, additional injections of acetylcholine, or vagal stimulation, increase the rate of fibrillation. Atropine in small doses reverts the fibrillation to normal sinus rhythm.

A chemical method has been devised for the quantitative determination of plasma antithrombin. A concentrate of antithrombin has been prepared from plasma. It also contains heparin cofactor activity. The two distinct activities could not be separated and may quite possibly be the properties of a single substance. When the concentrate is combined with heparin the capacity of the concentrate to destroy thrombin is not increased but there is interference with the thrombin fibrinogen interaction. In a mixture of the concentrate and thrombin there is simultaneous destruction of antithrombin, and thrombin activities. Small amounts of the concentrate significantly prolong the clotting time of blood.

The experimental data obtained on the viscoelastic behavior of isolated aortic strips of the dog consist of: (1) the resonant or natural frequency of forced or free longitudinal vibration; (2) the logarithmic decrement. From these data, static and dynamic moduli and the time constants for the specimens are computed. Variations of these values with frequency, temperature and elongation are presented. The experimental observations are not adequately explained by a simple mechanical analogue. An alternative explanation is offered based on studies of dynamic elasticity in high polymers.

The total QRS interval or R wave crest time in single leads is not accurate for measuring the total ventricular activation time, and is inadequate for an estimate of the ventricular activation rate, as related to the directional time rate of excitation of the total contributing muscle mass. For a more detailed and precise analysis of the ventricular activation, the angular speed in the central segment of the spatial QRS loop was determined in 103 normal men and 26 patients, and significant differences independent of the total QRS duration were obtained.

The abrupt rise in mean arterial pressure resulting from elimination of the moderator reflexes is not accompanied by a significant increase in cardiac output. The acute hypertension is therefore attributed to a severe generalized vasoconstriction. The severity of this vasomotor response progressively diminishes during the interval immediately following denervation.

Direct measurements were made of the collateral flow to the left lower lobe of the lung after occlusion of the left pulmonary artery in anesthetized, open-chest dogs. Immediately after ligation of the pulmonary artery flow ranged from 4.4 to 9 cc. per minute and varied with the height of the systemic blood pressure. The flow at a given blood pressure did not increase during 2 to 4 hours of observation. After chronic ligation of the left pulmonary artery, the flow increased, ranging from 68 to 376 cc. per minute at the end of approximately one year.
