In dogs with chronic aortic insufficiency accompanied by cardiac hypertrophy, the coronary blood flow, cardiac oxygen consumption, coronary arteriovenous oxygen difference, coronary oxygen utilization, systolic pressure and cardiac rate are increased significantly above the normals, while coronary venous oxygen saturation, coronary resistance and diastolic pressure are significantly decreased.

Radioautographic evidence using Ca45Cl2is presented to demonstrate that the aorta has an inherent ability to bind calcium ion regardless of age, sex or species. The binding occurs primarily in the intima and is not homogeneously distributed. Experiments with boiled aorta suggest that the primary substance responsible is collagen. The binding of calcium by the aorta has a marked effect upon the stability of emulsions. A theory of arterial plaque formation is presented.

In the region of the atrioventricular node a characteristic cell potential was obtained by microelectrode recording in dogs. The resting and action potentials obtained here were small and the latter had a step-like potential before the steepest rise. The site of origin was examined histologically by a special staining technic and was found to be from a cell of the atrioventricular node or a part of the special junctional tissue adjacent to it.

A chronic type of experimental hypertension has been produced in dogs by bilateral sinus area constriction. Hypophysectomy has a prolonged antihypertensive effect in dogs with persistent hypertension resulting from carotid sinus area constriction, while no decrease in mean arterial pressure is seen after hypophysectomy in normotensive control dogs. These findings suggest the possibility that altered hypophyseal function participates in the pathogenesis of this type of hypertension.

When linoleic acid is added to the diet of the rat there is an average increase in incorporation of radiocarbon into liver cholesterol of 259 per cent. By contrast, the addition of coconut oil to the diet does not increase the incorporation of radiocarbon into liver cholesterol. The addition of linoleic acid to a stock diet is associated with an increased fecal excretion of Liberman-Burchard chromogens, 3-β-hydroxy sterols and bile acids.

The intracarotid injection of hypertonic saline in the rabbit induces a brief drop in arterial pressure followed by a somewhat longer pressor phase. The “osmoreceptors” activating these changes are related to the hindbrain and are not the elements responsible for releasing neurohypophysial hormones. The pressure changes are not prevented by vagotomy, deafferentation of the carotid body and sinus, adrenalectomy, or parasympathetic blockade. The blood pressure effects are interpreted as resulting from sequential inhibition and stimulation of medullary vasomotor centers by the hypertonic solutions.

Comparative studies of glycogen content, rate of glycolysis, and lactic acid accumulation were carried out over a 2 hour period in potassium-arrested hearts excised from dogs with and without preliminary infusion of glucose and insulin. Glycogen consumption occurred at 60 to 100 per cent of the expected rate for 60 min., but was subsequently much less in both groups of animals. Lactic acid accumulation apparently was a critical factor with respect to continued metabolism after 60 min. Reperfusion of the coronary circulation after 90 min. of circulatory arrest revealed damage to the coronary microcirculation.

Coronary and systemic hemodynamics were compared in 15 normal men and 15 normal women. Systemic hemodynamics were very similar. The women had 26.5 per cent greater coronary flow and 19.6 per cent more oxygen consumption/100 Gm. of left ventricular myocardium. Their calculated coronary vascular resistance was 35 per cent less. Significant negative correlations between coronary flow and calculated heart weight, and between cardiac oxygen consumption and calculated heart weight, as well as between coronary flow and hematocrit probably explain the differences in part. Whether hormonal or anatomic differences are also significant is not known.
