Dynamics and control are the two fundamental issues in designing robotic manipulators for industrial applications. This paper summarizes most of the recent research results concerning the dynamics and the gross motion control of manipulators. The control of manipulators is presented in a unified manner so that various controller design schemes can be compared within the same framework.

This study intends to investigate a calibration procedure for a proposed combined trip generation and distribution model which is based on the concept of accessibility. Apart from the proofs of the existence and uniqueness of the solution, the computation efficiency is evaluated by using Cesario's data (1). The calibration procedure is further tested with empirical data which is obtained from an actual transportation survey carried out in Kaohsiung City of Taiwan, the Republic of China.

Analytical solutions of solid‐liquid conjugated Graetz problems with applications in the analysis of heat transfer in the capillary die are presented. In these problems, temperatures in adjacent phases are coupled through the conjugated conditions, which require that the flux and the rate of transfer are continuous. An analytical solution is obtained by using the direct eigenfunction expansion technique. The resulting generalized Sturm‐Liouville problem is not of the conventional type due to the discontinuity of the coefficient which arises from the conjugated conditions at the phase interface. An efficient numerical algorithm is developed to find the eigenvalues, eigenfunctions and the related coefficients. Sturm's equi‐oscillation theorem is applied to overcome the difficulty due to the discontinuity of the coefficients. The problem of heat removal from a heated solid cylinder by a surrounding annular flow fluid is solved. Results are in good agreement with existing solutions. The same technique is used to analyze the heat transfer in a capillary die. Results obtained show that wall resistance does have a significant effect on the temperature profile of the fluid.

An adaptive control strategy is proposed for the gross motion control of general purpose industrial manipulators. The control structure consists of a self‐tuning variational control component and a feedforward compensation component. Two control schemes are derived and their performance in tracking accuracy and robustness is evaluated by computer simulation.

In this paper, we shall discuss the performance of the Disk Modulo allocation method which was proposed by Du and Sobolewski for Cartesian product files on multiple disk systems. A performance formula which can be used directly to evaluate the average response time to all possible partial match queries by using Disk Modulo allocation method is derived.
