A new micro‐architecture, called IAS‐S, has been found to supportboostingefficiently. The new system employs asemantic registerand aboosting boundary registerto eliminate the dependencies caused by conditional branches. In IAS‐S, there is no dedicatedshadow register file. Multilevel boosting is supported without multiple copies of register files. Using a semantic register makes it possible to regard any general‐purpose register in IAS‐S as a sequential register or as a shadow register. Thus, idle registers can be used to help reduce spill code or to relieve storage conflicts. This is a distinct advantage over the dedicated shadow register file scheme, in which idle shadow registers cannot be used for such purposes. Furthermore, the IAS‐S micro‐architecture employs multi‐way jump in conjunction with boosting to reduce the time delays due to frequent control transfers.

Superscalar processing can improve the performance of a single CPU beyond that of traditional RISC machines by exploiting instruction‐level parallelism. It is the objective of this study to design a superscalar system which will best exploit a given program's instruction‐level parallelism.

A set of algorithms which can be used to detect and locate the faults in a given memory system, and a test program generator which automatically produces test programs according to the algorithms which are used by the memory system to be tested are developed. Furthermore, a fault simulator designed to simulate the faulty behavior of a memory system has been developed to evaluate the effectiveness of the test program in covering faults. Results showed that a fault coverage near 100% could be achieved.

In this paper, we propose a controller design method for SISO linear systems which have input actuators that may saturate. Operating under input constraints imposed by the actuators, the controllers are required to track a fixed reference and to reject persistent bounded disturbances appearing at plant output. The proposed methodology uses a linear programming technique to enable the controllers to fulfill these requirements.

The order picking problem is an important issue in the operation of an Automatic Storage/Retrieval System (AS/RS). An area propagation‐based model designed to estimate the expected travel time required to pick an order is presented in this paper. The estimation model of the Nearest Neighbor (NN) heuristic was derived and Monte Carlo Sampling was adopted to show the accuracy of the estimation model. The model can be applied to a carousel system with some slight modifications.

A very simple vector control algorithm based on the space vector theory is proposed for induction motor drives. The proposed method controls motor torque directly and linearly to achieve instantaneous torque response without oscillation. It possesses a simple architecture which obviates the generation of the unit vector and the time varying coordinate transformation. Also, both the constant torque control and the constant power control are easily incorporated into the proposed algorithm. At the same time, a new space vector based current controller is proposed to work in conjunction with the proposed method. The controller takes full advantage of the zero voltage space vector so that the switching frequency is significantly reduced without sacrifices in performance. As a result, efficiency can be greatly increased. It is seen that through the integration of the above two parts, it is possible to implement a high performance drive system using a low cost microcomputer (8051).

A new technique has been developed for controlling the crystal‐growth rate in the aqueous solution method. This technique provides a programmable preset of the temperature evolution of solution. Initially, the growth rate is kept slow to ensure good crystal quality. Gradually the rate is accelerated to increase the growth efficiency. A simple control mechanism is devised to achieve a very slow and pre‐determined cooling rate, which can be adapted to the temperature‐related characteristics of various solutions and thermistor sensor. Single crystal growth of KDP has been demonstrated. The result verifies our prediction that a linear growth rate of the crystal dimension with a good seed‐to‐grown crystal interface can be obtained programmatically.

This paper presents the design of a special‐purpose cellular tree architecture for the unification algorithm. The unification algorithm either finds the most general substitution which makes a set of terms identical, or else returns failure. The resulting substitution is permitted to contain loops. Many of the more recent pure logic programs make use of such recursive substitutions to store data structures which are accessed in a lazy fashion. So lack of such an occurs check is intentional. The algorithm involves only integer comparison and shifting operations between adjacent cells in a data‐driven computation mode. The physical design of a VLSI chip, therefore, should be quite easy. Each unification problem runs on the cellular tree in worst‐case timeO(n ·logn), wherenis the number of input symbols. Many unification problems can be run simultaneously on the same chip with no slowdown.

In this paper, a new three phase AC to DC converter is proposed to achieve a sinusoidal current waveform and the unity power factor at the input, and clean DC at the output. Control of the converter is so simple that only one PWM control circuit with fixed switching frequency is required. In addition, the new converter has both step‐up and step‐down capabilities. Also, no current sensor is required for the current control. The small signal model and some design considerations are also presented. Finally, some experimental results are provided for the purposes of demonstration.
