We propose an ATM‐LAN interconnection solution using multiple virtual channel connections, so that each MAC frame can be divided into cells and be transmitted via several parallel links simultaneously. The performance of the ATM‐LAN gateway in such setups, including multiplexing gain and the end‐to‐end delay, is studied via approximate analysis and simulations. Our approach is shown to provide better multiplexing effects under various traffic environments.

Asymptotically stable constrained systems subject to time‐delay are considered. We use the properties of a matrix measure and a comparison theorem to investigate this problem. Three kinds of controllers are considerd to treat this constrained time‐delay control problem. The results obtained can be used to estimate the duration of delay time. Finally, an illustrative example is given to demonstrate that the new sufficient conditions are less conservative than the ones reported [1,17] recently.

This study concerns a novel type of polymer dispersed ferroelectric liquid crystal film (Polymer/FLC composite film). An investigation of the relationships between the physical properties of materials and electro‐optic properties of composite films has been undertaken. Results show that the composite films exhibit an electro‐optic response time in the order of several hundreds microseconds (μs), and the best contrast ratio is about 13:1. In addition, we found that the viscosity of perpolymer should not be too high, the refractive index of polymer should be suitable for obtaining higher transmission, and the dispersed shape of the FLC droplets should be long‐elliptical networks. Better electro‐optic properties can be obtained if these conditions are followed.

The dependency of the sublimation rate of Cu(thd)2solid particles on the space height in the sample cell and under various gas velocities was investigated. Our results can be satisfactorily explained via a working model based on the combined effects of diffusion and convection. We also showed that due to the ever decreasing precursor quantity during a CVD process, its sublimation rate will decrease accordingly. Nevertheless, this decrease can be minimized and be made negligible by using a pelletized sample and placing this pellet in flush with the cell rim (i.e. zero space height).

In light of recent results by Verdú and Han on channel capacity, we examine three problems: the strong converse condition to the channel coding.theorem, the capacity of arbitrary channels with feedback and the Neyman‐Pearson hypothesis testing type‐II error exponent. It is first remarked that the strong converse condition holds if and only if the sequence of normalized channel information densities converges in probability to a constant. Examples illustrating this condition are provided. A general formula for the capacity of arbitrary channels with output feedback is then obtained. Finally, a general expression for the Neyman‐Pearson type‐II error exponent based on arbitrary observations subject to a constant bound on the type‐I error probability is derived.

A description of the fracture geometry pattern is a primary requirement to assess the hydraulic and mechanical behaviors of jointed rock masses. In order to enhance the reliability of fracture data, this paper proposes some analytic techniques based on statistical approaches to characterize and analyze the variability of fracture pattern. Various distributed forms including the goodness of fit tests are used to model fracture data (such as orientation, spacing, trace length and interconnectivity index) distribution. An extensive fracture database was developed for andesite rock at Lan‐Yu, Taiwan, to support work on the fracture hydrology characteristics of jointed rock masses. Results based on cluster analysis show that fracture orientation data can be delineated by four sets at the Lan‐Yu site. The best fit form for orientation distribution of each set was not found, but the Fisher distribution is suggested due to its simple form. The best fit distributions of spacings and trace lengths can respond to exponential and log‐normal, respectively. The results also indicate that one of the four fracture sets has a larger variation than the others according to spacing analysis. The same trend occurs in the analysis of fracture trace length. All have mean interconnectivity values larger than unity, indicating that the four fracture sets provide hydraulic communication within the fracture network.

In this study the hydraulic characteristics and the start‐up of anaerobic rotating biological contactor (AnRBC) were investigated experimentally and theoretically. Results of tracer study showed that the AnRBC reactor is a well‐mixed reactor in the first and second stages. Start‐up of the AnRBC reactor was successfully carried out using high strength synthetic wastewaters at hydraulic retention time of 21.6 hours, organic surface loading of 111.4 g‐COD/m2•d, organic volumetric loading of 13.33 Kg‐COD/m3•d, disk rotational speed of 12 rpm and 100% disk submergence. In the steady‐state operating condition, the removal efficiencies of soluble COD and BOD could be up to 71% and 76% for the inlet COD and BOD concentrations of 12,000 and 7,267 mgL‐1, respectively. The microscopic observations after start‐up of the AnRBC reactor showed that the acetogenic bacteria are significant in the first two stages while the methanogenic bacteria predominate in the last two stages.

The paper presents a new formulation of harmonic current injection of the 6‐pulse uncontrolled bridge rectifier with commutation impedance. In cooperation with a train simulator developed earlier, the proposed harmonic source model is applied in a harmonic analysis program to comprehensively simulate the harmonic penetration in the Blue Line of Taipei Rapid Transit Systems (TRTS). Both frequency scans and harmonic distortion calculations were performed for various system component models. Simulation results indicated that both the voltage and current harmonic distortions in the Blue Line of TRTS were improved by use of 24‐pulse rectifiers. The application of further harmonic suppression schemes in traction networks to alleviate the harmonic distortions can be achieved using the simulated results.

A non‐adiabatic CSTR with an irreversible first order reaction is investigated. When the original non‐linear system is transformed into the linear system, two adjustable parameters are introduced into the linear system. The tuning of the controller is done by pole assignment techniques in the linear system. Suitable system parameters and appropriate controller gains are also obtained. By numerical simulations, the performance of the controller is favorably compared with the results obtained by Hoo and Kantor.
