摘要:
This study investigated parents' and health care providers' perspectives of their commumcative interactions when a seriously ill infant is treated in an intensive care nursery Both parents and health care providers stressed the importance of keeping parents informed of their child's condition Concerns regarding the provision of medical information to parents in an understandable manner, the lack of time health care providers have to spend interacting with parents, and the possibility that parents' emotional involvement interferes with their understanding of the child's condition were raised Implications for pediatric health care providers relative to their interactions with parents of young chronoically ill children are raised.

摘要:
The development of two brief self-report measures for assessing parent-child communication specific to pediatric cancer is reported The instruments assess the quality of parent-child communication with their ill child and the sibling of the ill child The measures have good internal consistency and are significantly related to the overall level of healthy sibling adjustment.

摘要:
This study reports the evaluation of an easily implemented and inexpensive procedure for increasing preschool children's use of car safety devices Teachers inside a day-care center gave rewards (colorful stickers) to buckled-up children based on parents' reports of safety device usage Safety compliance rates increased from a Baseline average of 37 7% to 86 2% in the reward period (based on external, unobtrusive observations) Some drop-off in usage to an average of 67 9% occurred when the rewards ceased during the return-to-baseline phase Few parents untruthfully reported compliance.

摘要:
This study identified how adolescents cope with hospitalization for surgery and the congruency between anticipated and actual coping strategies Preoperative emotional state was examined in relation to the type of reported coping strategies Fifty-nine adolescents were interviewed before and after surgery Six coping strategies were identified Although there was no statistically significant relationship between anticipated and actual strategies, the highest proportion of adolescents in the study (23 of 59) both anticipated and reported the use of strategies to regulate the emotional distress aroused by stressful encounters during hospitalization No statistically significant relationship existed between preoperative emotional state and reported coping strategies.

摘要:
The author calls for a more positive and supportive stance by professionals in their interactions with families coping with the reaction to the birth or diagnosis of a child with special needs While many of the references are historical in nature, the negative perception of parental reactions forms the basis for professional training and continues to be practiced despite the advancements in opportunities for individuals with developmental disabilities and the current emphasis on family-centered care.
