摘要:
This article describes the application of hospice principles and values to situations involving children--here identified by the phrase "pediatric hospice cate" The exposition is carned out in two ways First, we explore the basic principles and values of hospice care to make them clear as a foundation for what follows and to dispel misunderstandings Second, we indicate some of the many ways m which those principles and values can have relevance to situations involving children and to lnstitutions in our society Our underlying concern is to acknowledge the work of those caregivers who are already engaged in some aspect of this sort of care and to encourage expansion of that interest on behalf of those children and families who need this sort of supportive care.

摘要:
The selective nontreatment of handicapped newborns is an issue that has been of prominent legal debate since the 1982 Department of Health and Human Services 'Baby Doe Regulations It is also an issue of great ethical debate This article analyzes the dilemma using the principle of nonmaleficence In addition the related constructs of ordinary versus extraordinary care, the quahfications of personhood, and the quality of life versus sanctity of life are explained Nonmaleficence is discussed in terms ot the ethical decision-making impact upon the child, the famlly, health care professionals, and society.

摘要:
The purpose of this study was to describe the family environments (Family Environment Scale) of families in which a child had died from cancer to compare the family environments of these bereaved families with those of normal and distressed families, and to examine the relationship between the family environments and the behavioral responses (Achenbach Child Behavior Checklist) of the surviving siblings Subjects were 34 families in the Western United States and Canada who had experienced the death of a child from cancer and who had at least one surviving child, aged between 6 and 16 years Results indicate that bereaved families are more like normal than like distressed families Families with higher Cohesion, Active/Recreational Orientation, and Moral/ Religious Emphasis have children who demonstrate fewer behavioral problems up to 3 years after siblings death The higher the family emphasis on Active/Recreational Orientation and Intellectual/Cultural Orientation, the greater the social competence demonstrated by the children Findings suggest that support gamed by having a family emphasis on social involvement is associated with the children's behavior scores Implications for health care professionals are discussed.

摘要:
Children's expressed attitudes toward handicapped peers are related to many factors In this review the authors assess recent literature and present data from their own studies concerning the role of gender, age, parental attitudes, volunteering, familiarity with a disabled person, and the physical structure of schools as determinants of attitudes The importance of understanding these determinants is discussed.

摘要:
Two coping resources, religiosity and locus of control, derived from a cognitive theory of coping were assessed in a sample of 140 mothers of retarded children Data analysis examined the relationship of these variables to measures of coping and to maternal demographic characteristics Results indicated that both religiosity and locus of control were related to maternal depression and well-being Mothers with a more internal locus of control reported less depression than other mothers did despite similar levels of physical incapacitation The same was true for mothers who reported greater religiosity.

摘要:
Asthmaic and healthy children aged 5 to 13 years were assessed on their understanding of respiration and digestion Results indicated that children's understanding of these bodily processes followed an orderly developmental progression Asthmatic children failed to demonstrate any greater cognitive advantage than healthy children in terms of their understanding of respiration Results are discussed in terms of their implications for disease-related communications and educational programming.

摘要:
Because of the increased number of allegations of sexual abuse made by young children and the often severe legal penalties given to adult perpetrators, there is reason for concern about false or mistaken accusations This article develops a conceptual model for medical professionals so that they may judge the truthfulness of such allegations by a young child when medical evidence supporting the allegation is nonexistent or inconclusive.
