摘要:
The results of a major review of the literature on the psychosocial implications of pediatric hospitalization and health care, covering more the 300 research reports appearing since 1965 are summarized. Among the topics addressed are children's responses to hospitalization, the effects of separation and parental rooming-in, parental responses to hospitalization, the hospital environment, play, and preparation. Suggestions for future research are also discussed.

摘要:
This descriptive field study investigated children's understanding of the cerebral computed tomography scan procedure. Two groups of 10 children each (ages 5-8 and 9-11) were interviewed to determine their thoughts and feelings about the procedure and the information they would like to have before the procedure. The two groups were compared and statistically significant results were found between them. The older group evidenced higher levels of conceptual understanding of the procedure. The findings indicate the necessity of taking into account the cognitive level of the child when designing and using educational materials.

摘要:
ight school-aged boys with hemophilia were studied using participant-observation techniques. These boys were observed to refrain from engaging in self-revealing statements about their hemophilia either in order to clarify their chronic illness or in order to minimize physical risks in group participation. This shift in behavior observed during these middle-childhood years appears to be the result of heightened self-consciousness. Following a discussion of intervention models, suggestions are offered for social intermediation to enable peer participation.

摘要:
The present article compares the quantitative and qualitative approaches, describes selected qualitative methodologies, and presents a rationale for using these techniques in children's health research. An example is given of a study that combined the two methodolgies in order to understand the experiences of well children during routine health care.

摘要:
This paper focuses on some of the major issues surrounding the measurement of children's pain, particularly as they relate to problems of definition, level of measurement, dimensionality, reliability, and validity. The authors briefly describe some of the tools used with children and point out some of the problems that have resulted from the lack of well-tested, thoroughly validated instruments for children. As a common experience of hospitalized children, pediatric pain is creating concern within the health care community. The authors recommend that more attention be paid to the measurement issues surrounding this clinical phenomenon.

摘要:
Ethical considerations in pediatric psychosocial research make many demands on the researcher. This article defines basic concepts such as risk, risk/benefit evaluation, and consent/assent as it applies to pediatric research. The implications of these concepts to the researcher are discussed. Guidelines to protect the psychosocial aspects of pediatric population are included.
