摘要:
This study examined measurement of the effects of a pediatric hospitalization on siblings using a Percieved Change Scale Data on perceived changes in feelings and behaviors were obtained from 30 siblings 5 to 10 years of age in a structured interview and from 41 siblings 11 to 17 years of age with a questionnaire Responses to the questionnaire used to assess perceived changes in older siblings formed a single dimension with adequate reliability, criterion validity, and concurrent validity Responses to the structured interview used for younger siblings formed three dimensions, with a lower alpha coefficient Suggestions for use of these scales are made.

摘要:
This study examined levels of anxiety in 51 parents who did not room in with their young hospitalized children The Spielberger StateTrait Inventory was used to measure parental anxiety twice, with a 3-day interval Levels of anxiety were significantly higher in parents with a greater number of children at home, less education, and lower social status Findings of clinical significance were (a) the longer the child's hospitalization the more anxious parents became, especially if there were children at home, (b) hospitalization of a child was more stressful for fathers because they maintain lower trait anxiety than mothers, and (c) as parental visits to their hospitalized child decreased, parental anxiety levels increased.

摘要:
Materials created by patients who have undergone medical procedures and surgery are being used by the health team at Miller Children s Hospital to help prepare other children for their hospital experiences The materials include booklets written by children about their tests and surgeries, drawings illustrating their hospital experiences, and photographs of treatment rooms and equipment These booklets are compiled, along with supplies associated with the tests and surgeries, into attractively decorated boxes Case studies have shown that the input from peers who have created the preparation materials is well received by patients and has added credibility to the teaching sessions The creators of the preparation boxes have also benefitted by helping other children and by putting their own hospital experiences into perspective.

摘要:
Based on a sample of 148 married adults, the present study found that parents of chronically ill children perceive a lesser amount of social support than do adults who parent children without illnesses Fathers of children with illnesses were least likely to perceive social supports in their environment Type of illness was also found to be a significant factor with parents of diabetic children perceiving the lowest levels of support The implications of the study are discussed in terms of clinical practice with families and future research into the role that the social perception of the seriousness of illness may play in eliciting aid from the supportive network.

摘要:
Four free-standing children's hospitals, two large pediatric units in general hospitals, and clinics and other health care facilities that serve children in four countries in Central America were visited in the summer of 1985 This paper summarizes the degree of family involvement and the play opportunities for patients present in these institutions and assesses the likelihood of future developments in psychosocial care in the pediatric facilities of Central America.

摘要:
This article examines selected research on compliance with orthodontic treatment regimens among pediatric (child and adolescent) patients Few conclusive findings were noted, primarily because most studies reviewed were found to have one or more serious methodological flaws that hinder their usefulness In addition, a number of published studies provided insufficient information to allow for critical evaluation of the methodology or interpretation of the results Directions for future research are suggested, including the correction of methodological problems and the use of current health behavior models in the design of studies.

摘要:
Nursing caries syndrome (NCS) is a serious dental health problem affecting mostly infants and preschool-aged children Although multifactorial in origin, NCS appears to be most closely related to feeding practices, especially the prolonged use of feeding bottles containing canogenic liquids This paper reviews the history and epidemiology of NCS and summarizes the implications for children's health care personnel who work with new and prospective parents.

摘要:
Numerous projects conducted in various settings have supported the thesis that nature activities aid in the development of self-concept, self-confidence, and level of achievement The nature activities described in this article were designed to cultivate the hospitalized children a sense of wonder about their world and to revolve them in sensory experiences that would aid them in adjusting to their hospital experiences As a unit, these experiments provide a comprehensive approach to therapy for the hospitalized child and add a positive dimension to the child life program.

摘要:
Because children often know how best to meet the needs of children, looking at the hospital through their eyes can be a way to improve patient care Forming a board made up of children is one means of reaching this goal Board members raise issues based on their own hospital experiences or knowledge about hospitals In addition, hospital departments request opinions, suggestions, etc, from children on a variety of topics menus, decorations, educational material, and more The board creates an awareness about the patients and their special needs as children, both within the hospital and in the community.
