In this study 208 patients with adenocarcinoma of the uterine cervix were examined for the occurrence of tumors metastatic to this location. A total of 45 secondary tumors were found, 31 with a primary endometrial tumor, 6 with an ovarian serous or mucinous adenocarcinoma, 2 tubal tumors, 5 colonic adenocarcinomas, and 1 primary mammary tumor. Clinical and morphological aspects were studied, indicating the need for consideration of metastatic tumors as explanation for suspected neoplastic cervical lesions.

Relative binding affinities (RBA) for the androgen receptor were estimated for levonorgestrel, progesterone, dihydrotestosterone, cyproterone acetate, 17α-propylmesterolone and 3-keto-desogestrel (13-ethinyl-ll-methylene-18,19-dinor-17α-pregn-4-en-20-yn-17-ol-3-one) which is the biological active metabolite of desogestrel. Mouse kidney cytosol served as receptor source. In addition, stimulation of mouse kidney β-glucuronidase by subcutaneous injection of various doses of these compounds was determined. RBA for the androgen receptor of 3-keto-desogestrel was significantly greater (p < 0.02) than that of levonorgestrel, and 3-keto-desogestrel was registered to enhance β-glucuronidase activity more than levonorgestrel at the highest dose level (p < 0.005). Furthermore, cyproterone acetate in the presence of testosterone was found to exert synandrogenic action at the lower dose level but suppressed enzyme activity at the higher doses. On the other hand, 17α-propylmesterolone which had RBA similar to the one noted for cyproterone acetate showed only synandrogenic properties at the dose levels tested. The data combine to suggest that biological activity of a compound cannot be accurately predicted by receptor assays. Desogestrel and levonorgestrel exhibit similar androgenic properties in this model system. These data correlate with clinical experience on oral contraceptives containing levonorgestrel and desogestrel, respectively, which do not differ from each other in their androgen-related side effects.

The specific androgen, estrogen and progestin binding was studied in normal human endometrium during various phases of the menstrual cycle. The simultaneous presence of these three hormone receptors was a common finding. Androgen receptor concentrations did not show cyclic variations. A copper intrauterine device had no effect on the endo-metrial androgen, estrogen and progestin receptor concentrations.

Smooth muscle microsomal vesicles were loaded with calcium in the presence of oxalate and ATP. The intact vesicles that contained calcium oxalate crystals were separated by ultracentrifugation from empty vesicles. This results in a unique model system, composed of a biologically active membrane with virtually all of the calcium inside. Intravesicular calcium is differentiated from externally bound calcium using ionophore X537A and EGTA. EGTA released calcium slowly with a half time of 93 min. The ionophore X537A rapidly released calcium with a half time of 12 min. This model can be used to test for calcium ionophoretic action. Prostaglandin (PG) E2 and prostacyclin (PGI2) were tested in this system. We found that PGE2 and PGI2 did not change calcium permeability.

The presence of chromosome abnormalities in couples with repeated spontaneous abortion is known even if the phenomenon is far from a complete assessment. A cytogenetic investigation in 50 couples with a history of two or more spontaneous abortions is referred to in this study. A peripheral blood lymphocyte culture was harvested for each subject and the slides were stained by G- and C-banding. Of the 100 individuals examined, 4 were carriers of balanced translocations, 3 of which were of the Robertsonian type. A chromosomal fragility (chromatidic and/or chromosomic gaps) was seen in 2 cases. The incidence of balanced translocations found here is 8% which is near to the mode (about 9%) observed in previous studies. Those frequencies are greater than in the general population (0.1–0.4%). This indicates that balanced translocations have some importance in causing abortion while this is not the case for other chromosomal abnormalities (e.g. pericentric inversions). Thus, cytogenetic analyses should be recommended in couples with repeated spontaneous abortions, when clinical data fail to clarify the cause.

In order to understand the mechanism of congenital human cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection we studied the effect of CMV on epithelial cell culture of the endometrium. Endometrial cells proved to be sensitive to CMV as indicated by morphologic alterations, success to support growth of infectious virus and positive immunoperoxidase staining. The infected cells were enlarged, multinuclear and revealed intranuclear inclusions. Electron microscopy detected the presence of the viral particles in the CMV-infected endometrial cells. The possibility that CMV infection of the endometrial cells may play a role in transmitting the virus to the embryo will be discussed.

In full-term pregnant women, electrical and mechanical activity of the uterus was monitored throughout the course of labour promoted by intravenous infusion of Pg F2 alpha. The recorded potentials were mostly biphasic and characterized by their long duration ranging from 1 to 2s. A wide range of potential amplitudes (100 µV to 1.8 mV) was observed according to the various patients. Early at the beginning of labour induction, the electrical complexes firing at various uterine sites were proved to be in close relationship and also well correlated with the mechanical events. This feature remained unchanged during labour. Potential amplitudes also remained unchanged during the same period of time. Under these conditions, improvement of uterine coordination does not appear to be the mechanism by which the increase of uterine contractile strength, necessary to expel the fetus, is obtained at the end of gestation

In rats fertilized during the 1 st or 2nd day postpartum (second consecutive pregnancy), suckling induces intrauterine blastocyst dormancy and delays implantation for 8–22 days. In spite of this relatively long time of blastocyst dormancy, associated with greatly reduced cellular metabolism, subsequent implantation and growth results in significantly larger litters (13.6 ± 0.62; x ± SE) than in primigravidas (10.4 ± 0.89) or in rats with a second-spaced pregnancy (11.2 ± 0.72). Enhanced fecundity in rats with second consecutive pregnancies may be attributed to increased ovarian blood supply of preceding gestation and/or to augmented pituitary FSH-LH secretion resulting in intensified ovarian gonadotropic stimulation for postpartum ovulation.
