Effects of serotonin, prostaglandin E2, prostaglandin F2α, U 46619 (a thromboxane A2 mimetic) and angiotensin I and II on the perfusion pressure were studied on vessel segments from human umbilical arteries, placental arteries and the umbilical vein during in vitro perfusions. All drugs were found to induce vasoconstriction. Serotonin displayed strong vasoconstrictor potencies in all vessel segments, whereas the responsiveness to the other autacoids differed greatly in the various segments. In the umbilical artery prostanoids were most potent in the juxtafetal segment, whereas angiotensin I and II displayed greatest effects in the juxtaplacental segment. The results lend additional support to the concept that angiotensins and prostanoids are of importance in the regulation of fetal extracorporeal blood flow.

Laminin, a noncollagenous glycoprotein component of basement membranes, was measured in human serum by radioimmunoassay for the laminin PI fragment. The concentration of immunoreactive laminin increased during pregnancy. Before delivery it was nearly twice the level found in nonpregnant women. After delivery levels dropped. Decreased serum concetrations were detected in placental insufficiency whereas increased concentrations were found in sera of preeclamptic women. Immunoreactive serum laminin seems to correlate with the amount or degradation of placental basement membranes in pregnancy.

Tissue pieces from the wall (i.e. tunica albuginea with adjacent theca externa) of human follicles were incubated with and without various hormones and their potential influence upon the collagenolytic activity was evaluated. Following incubation the collagenase activity was determined in the incubation medium by measurement of the hydrolytic activity against the synthetic peptide 2,4-dinitrophenyl-Pro-Gln-Gly-Ile-Ala-Gly-Gln-D-Arg-OH. Stimulated collagenolytic activity was seen in the presence of relaxin and oxytocin whereas prostaglandin E2, prostaglandin F2α, progesterone and 17β-estradiol were without effect. It is concluded that the stimulated collagenolytic activity induced by relaxin and oxytocin may be of importance for the degradation of collagen which occurs prior to follicular rupture.

The present study was carried out in order to establish whether the concomitant treatment with somatostatin (SRIH) is capable of modifying gonadotrophin release in response to LH-RH administration in normal women during follicular, periovulatory, and luteal phases. SRIH was administered in a dose of 5.55 μg/min over 180 min and LH-RH (100 μg) was injected as a bolus at 90 min after the beginning of SRIH infusion. Within the dose used, SRIH significantly reduced LH response to LH-RH, whereas it did not alter FSH response to LH-RH. These results suggest that SRIH may play a part in the regulation of LH secretion in normal women.

Total estradiol and progesterone receptor levels (TRE2, TRP) were measured in endometria of women with adult dysfunctional uterine bleeding (n = 22) and compared to those of controls. The women in both groups were comparable with respect to age, history, light and electron microscopic endometrial morphology and dating; plasma levels of LH, FSH, estradiol and progesterone were similar in both groups. A wide range of TRE2 and TRP levels was measured in both groups; however, the levels of the ratio of TRP/TRE2 for each case were significantly lower in 18 of the 22 women with adult dysfunctional uterine bleeding and were in the range of the controls in the remaining 4. Possible explanations for these findings are presented.

Avidin-biotin-peroxidase labelling technique was used to localize the binding sites of peanut agglutinin (PNA), Ulexeuropaeus (UEA-I), wheat germ agglutinin (WGA), concanavalin A (Con A), and Ricinuscommunis (RCA-I) in 30 samples of endometrium at different stages of the menstrual cycle and in early pregnancy. PNA and UEA-I exhibit weak binding to the apical portions of epithelial cells in proliferative and secretory phases, but become strongly positive in pregnancy. WGA and RCA-I show weak binding to glandular epithelium in the proliferative phase, but increase their affinity in the secretory phase. Con A demonstrates strong affinity to decidual cells

Solcogyn® is a new acid preparation for the treatment of benign changes in the portio uteri. Histological and histochemical investigations of the treated cervix in patients scheduled for hysterectomy revealed a differential effect of this acid mixture in that ectocervical squamous epithelium was scarcely affected, while ectopic and endocervical cylindrical epithelium and the subepithelial stroma were devitalized by in vivo fixation. The maximum depth of penetration of the fixative effect was 2.5 mm. The treated cervical ectopies and transformation zones re-epithelialized within 3–4 weeks. The comparatively slight but sufficiently deep devitalization of affected tissue explains the clinical advantages observed with this preparation as compared to thermocoagulation and cryotherapy.

Serum myoglobin was determined in 29 patients during a total of 46 cycles of treatment with epirubicin-cisplatin. Statistical evaluation showed highly significant correlations between the myoglobin values and the age of the patients and the cumulative dose of the cytostatic agents applied.
