The essential oils of wild and cultivatedLippia javanica(Spreng) and of wildL. oatesii(Rolfe) from Zimbabwe were obtained by steam distillation of the fresh and air-dried plant material and examined by GC and GC/MS. The oil composition ofL. javanicacollected in the wild from nine different centres was variable with one or more of the following being the major components: linalool (1.8–68.8%), myrcene (0.5–54.0%), limonene (0.4–39.9%), 2,6-dimethylstyrene (trace-26.9%), neral and geranial (trace-29.3%) and geraniol (trace-15.8%). CultivatedL. javanicafrom two pilot centers contained myrcene (33.1–52.4%) and linalool (1.7–19.1%) as the main components. The oil from fresh and air dried X.oatesiicollected from the wild contained geranial (23.0–38.9%), neral (18.1–28.5%), p-cymene (6.8–25.7%) and α-phellandrene (2.9–16.8%) as the major components. The two plants are potential sources of oils and important constituents and cultivation trials forL. oatesiiare underway.

Using GC/MS we examined the oils ofAchillea clavenae, A. collinaandA. lingulata. A. clavenaeoil contained high levels of camphene (29.6%) and bornyl acetate (10.8%),A. collinawas rich in 1,8-cineole (27.6%), chrysanthenone (8.5%) and camphor (9%), whileA. lingulatacontained borneol (20.3%) as the major constituent. Although these compounds occur in many varieties, their levels are characteristically high in these oils.

The essential oils of three species ofThryptomenenative to Queensland were examined.T. hexandraandT. parvifloraproduced oils in which 1,8-cineole (up to 70%) and α-pinene (up to 16%) were the principal components.T. oligandra, from far north Queensland, produced an oil in which γ-terpinene (32-62%) and p-cymene (25-50%) and α-pinene (1-20%) were the main components.

The leaf oils ofCymbopogon citratus(lemongrass),Renealmiasp., andHyptis recurvata, and the cortex oil ofTynanthus panurensis fromPeruvian Amazon have been isolated by hydrodistillation and analyzed by a combination of GC and GC/MS. Twelve, sixteen, and sixteen components have been identified in the leaf oils, accounting for 97.4%, 99.9% and 98.8% of the oils, respectively. The major constituents of the three leaf oils were found to be:C. citratus.geranial (49.9%), neral (30.9%) and geraniol (10.4%);Renealmia sp.:β-pinene (31.9%), 1,8-cineole (21.3%) and camphor (10.5%);H. recurvata:eugenol (68.8%) and 1,8-cineole (15.9%). TheT. panurensiscortex oil was comprised of a single constituent: eugenol (99.9%).

The chemical composition of the essential oils obtained from the galls and the aerial parts ofPistacia lentiscusL. (Anacardiaceae) was analyzed by GC/MS. Among the 58 constituents identified (representing 82.8% of the oil composition) sesquiterpene hydrocarbons predominated (ca. 47%), β-caryophyllene (13-1%), δ-cadinene (8.1%) and Germacrene D (6.8%) being the major components. Although galls and oils of the aerial parts were similar from a qualitative viewpoint, the latter oil was somewhat more complex (73 components identified, accounting for 85.4% of the oil) and the monoterpene hydrocarbons fraction (ca. 35%) was now dominant in the oil, α-pinene (13.0%), β-caryophyllene (6.9%), limonene and β-phellandrene (5.4%), β-pinene (4.9%) and p-cymene (4.7%) being the main components.

Water distilled oil of the herbal parts ofNepeta fissa(Labiatae) was analyzed by GC/MS. Thirty seven compounds representing 95.1% of the oil were identified with caryophyllene oxide (24%) and β-caryophyllene (8.3%) as main constituents.

The work evaluates the yield and the composition of the essential oil extracted from leafy and woody branches, cones, and seeds of a cultivated stand ofTetraclinis articulata(Vahl) Masters (Cupressaceae) growing in Malta. The main components were α-pinene, limonene, camphor, bornyl acetate, borneol and germacrene D. Our results show a number of differences in composition to a Moroccan study of the essential oil derived from homologous parts.

The essential oils of leaves and fruit pericarps ofZanthoxylum zanthoxyloideswere analyzed by GC and GC/MS. The leaf oil contained only monoterpene hydrocarbons (98.2%); among them, α-pinene (26.5%), myrcene (30.0%) and (E)-β-ocimene (31.9%) were most predominant. The composition of the fruit oil is more diverse, with 85.5% of monoterpenoids and a fairly large proportion of oxygenated compounds (30.9%), among which linalool (11.3%) and geranial (9.5%) were the most abundant. Both the leaf and fruit oils contained fairly large amounts of (E)-β-ocimene 31.9% and 41.5%, respectively.

The essential oils obtained by steam distillation of the seeds ofNigella sativaL. growing at different conditions of water stress in field, by a combination of GC and GC/MS. More than 15 compounds in the seed essential oil have been identified. Water stress was effective on content of essential oil. Thymoquinone that is one important medical compound in this plant, was 57.78% in irrigation over 12 days.
