Sustainable agriculture is a practice involving the management of resources for agriculture to satisfy the human needs, without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. Peppermint (MenthaxpiperitaL.) cultivation and essential oil production is described in relation to soil and nutrients, pests and pathogens, environmental factors, biotechnological applications, cell and tissue culture and essential oil distillation. Besides an overview on the state of the art of peppermint cultivation and oil production, new results are presented on the intercropping of peppermint with soybean and the selection of a new pest-resistant early blooming peppermint variety. The application of sustainable agricultural and technological methods for a sustainable peppermint oil production is discussed.

The essential oils of the leaves, flowers and leaf stems ofHyptis suaveolens(L.) (Lamiaceae) from Cameroon were analyzed by GC, GC/MS and olfactometry. The oils and headspace were characterized by a high percentage of monoterpenes. The main monoterpenes in the oils and headspace were sabinene (9.3–42.2%), β-pinene (3.4–9.6%), limonene (3.2–8.0%) and p-cymene (2–3%). The sesquiterpenes were represented by β-caryophyllene (2–14%) and cis-α-bergamotene (2–3%). The oils contained also a high number of oxygenated monoterpenes and sesquiterpenes of low concentration. Some diterpenes have been identified in the oil of ifH. suaveolens, particularly ar-abietatriene (2–6%), ar-abietatriene-19-ol (1%) and abietinol (1%).

The essential oil obtained from flowering shoots ofSalvia multicaulisVahl (Labiatae) was analyzed by GC/MS. Twenty-nine components were identified representing 99–5% of the oil with bornyl acetate (18.1%), β-caryophyllene (16.5%), α-pinene (15.6%), 1,8-cineole (8.3%) and limonene (8.3%) as major constituents.

Essential oils from Australian grown rose geranium(Pelargoniumhybrid) G1 clone, were analyzed regularly over a three year period using chiral and normal column gas chromatography. The G1 oil was compared to other commercial geranium oils using ten key chiral compounds. Comparisons were made using the new concept called chiral excess (CE), the first eluting enantiomer minus the second eluting enantiomer, and total excess (TE), the sum of all the CE's. This concept allowed the chirality of geranium oils to be expressed as a single number. TE was used to help distinguish between 18 geographically different and 24 seasonally different commercial oils. Applications of TE include classification of other chiral-containing oils and the detection of adulterants in essential oils.

Aerial parts ofMarrubium parviflorumsubsp.oligodonwere water distilled and the oil was analyzed by GC/MS. One hundred and thirty-nine compounds were identified representing 91–0% of the total components detected with hexadecanoic acid (15.4%), germacrene D (11.1%), (β-caryophyllene (10.0%) and (E)-β-farnesene (7.3%) as major constituents.

Volatile constituents of custard apple were isolated by simultaneous steam distillation-solvent extraction and analyzed by GC/MC. Fifty-three compounds were identified, 29 for the first time as volatile constituents of custard apple. The major compounds in the volatile concentrate were α-pinene, β-pinene, limonene, bornyl acetate and germacrene D.

We used GC/MS to determine the chemical composition of the essential oils of wild Achillea plants native to Yugoslavia:Achillea millefoliumL. ssp.pannonica(Scheele) Hayak,A. crithmifoliaW. et K.,A. serbicaNym. andA. tanacetifoliaAll. Seventy-four components were identified. All four oils contained camphor (4–16%), 1,8-cineole (6–23%) and borneol (4–16%). In addition, artemisia ketone (4%) was found inA. crithmifolia, α-thujone (4.5%) inAchillea millefolium, yomogi alcohol and 2-pyrolidone were specific toA. serbica, andA, crithmifoliacontained cis-chrysanthenol (1.4%) and large amounts of the corresponding acetate (23.4%).

Analysis of the leaf oil ofAegle marmelos(L.) Correa, Rutaceae, by capillary GC and GC/MS resulted in the identification of 35 components comprising 99.6% of the total oil. The oil was constituted mainly of monoterpene compounds (93.6%), α-phellandrene (39–2%), limonene (26.8%),βP-phellandrene (16.2%) and α-pinene (6.6%) were the major constituents found.

The essential oil of the leaves and stems ofLippia albavar.carterae, examined by GC/MS, is dominated by methyl chavicol (56.46±4.29%) and 1,8-cineole (12.62±4.26%).
